Sat Nav or Not to Sat Nav?

Featured Replies

Was toying with the idea of retro fitting the double din sat nav system and six disc changer. I have read a thread on how to fit the changer but not the sat nav head unit. Would it be a job for the dealer? ive seen the head unit going on ebay for about

If it's the one I saw in a vRS Fabia then it should have white lights, it cant be adjutsed via VAG-COM as the LED's are blue, however you should be able to take off the Sat Nav cover and replace with Skoda Green ones, but i'd get someone in the know to do this for you as no one wants to break

I'm thinking of getting sat nav myself but I've been looking at tomtom Go. Seems to have received good reviews.

I think a portable unit may be way forward

Does anyone know if a Fabia vRS has a heat reflective windscreen? If it does i may need the additional external antenna

Tomtom Go works fine in a Fabia. You even have the option to change the display to green.

Went on to the tomtom site and had a butchers and its a nice piece of kit but i really dont fancy having it suck to my windscreen. So it looks like im going to have to haggle with dealer and see what arrangement we could come to? If it comes down to it ill get the software for my mobile phone. Cheers for advice and a very merry christmas to you all!

You can actually stick the mount under the radio, so it sits just above the ashtray.

If you get a 'nav-man' satelite navigation system the antenna is on the back of the hand held unit and it just flips up, no need for extra reciever on the dash (soooo much easier to store and easily removable so as not to get it nicked!)

The maps are as good and if not better than Tom Tom including 3D mapping day and night views. I spent ages researching this and the PDA is like a small PC i use it for work and it amazing!! :D I use it almost everyday as i am a surveyor and can sometimes visit up to 10 different sites a day all over the country, all pre programmed, so user friendly. Got it 400

Don't agree with the ipod - I've got one (with itrip) and its an absolute pain in the **** to use in the car. It's difficult to find a good reception, and scrolling through tracks while on the move is a nightmare.

I've got an MP3 CD player in mine - 6cds on 1 disc

If you put the ipod near the top of the windscreen, say on a sun visor the signal is great, i know what you mean though. BTW just put it on shuffle! Or get SWMBO to do it!!

Was just looking around and ive found that there are different part numbers for the same VW sat nav one ending in "B" and one ending in "G" one would it be safe to say the one ending B is with the blue backlight and the one with the G is a green backlight?????

Not really, I believe these are hardware revisions, as I've seen a D version on the net. Unless they mean Deep Color (Blue or Red), it wouldn't make up a color.

Anyway, I've ordered a G version sat nav unit from ebay and I'm awaiting its arrival.

The picture of the unit showed an orange illumination (could have been poor red illumination though), which suits me, as I'm planning to change the dash color to orange anyway since the VDO screen is orange.

I'll keep you posted on the results once fitted.

How easy is it to fit the SatNav is a Fabia vRS? is it just a simple job of replacing the existing radio? do you need to fit an arial/GPS reciver anywhere is so what does this involve?

Once fitted what happens with the Radio? does the SatNav unit have a radio on it? and if so would it still work with the skoda seat mounted 6cd Changer?

what is the Skoda SatNav unit like, maps? postcode search, traffic/speed camera warnings?

My experience is with an octy but it was easy, what you need is ,navi unit mine was a g (hardware same as d but sofware different),a horse pill mag mount aerial that fits under the dash,a plug and play cable adaptor that swaps a couple of cables round and feeds the gala (speed pulse) to the 26? pin connector on the back of the sat nav unit . it took me about 45 minutes to install and most of that was dismantling the glovebox and under dash panel on the drivers side

The cable and aerial are available on e-bay and several other places

there is lots of info on

you will need a working map disc to set some things up

I have had a Tom Tom go for two years and it has been fantastic

It shortens your journey times (Less planning) and give you more confidence. I would highly recommend one.

Now is the right time to buy as well. There is a price war going on between Argos, Currys, Comet and Carphone Warehouse.

Surprisingly over the weekend Carphone had the upper hand.

I had a go with a Tom Tom the other week on a trip to wales and wasnt that impressed.

I found it difficult to see the screen in daylight, due to bright sunshine and a reflection on a wet road this would have been much better if the unit had been mounted lower down as you wouldnt be looking directly into brilliant sunshine. That said at night in the dark it was easy so see, but again one of the disadvantages of a portable unit is having to turn it into night mode, whereas a fitted unit I assume would change when the lights are turned on.

just replaces existing radio and tray. You fit an internal GPS receiver anywhere u like... i put mine in the centre of the dash by the window.

All you need is the cable adapter (available at www.satnavsystems.com )

YES it does work with existing Cd changer and it has a built in FM/AM radio

It does half postcodes, destination on map, street and town names. Very easy to use and iv not found a fault as yet.

Granted that can be annoying as indeed, it is not the perfect solution, but it is a

I've used a tomtom enabled PDA daily for 2 1/2 years now and one thing the latest version software has is FULL postcode search. Dont even look at one that only does a part search (which is most factory units) EG 'NW3 4' if you want to find the address quickly and correctly. I've found tomtom 5 to be a godsend. it has so far has never let me down in finding an address even tho it will send you on some bizarre routes to get there! All Sat Nav is good for is to guide you in the last few miles and give you a rough idea what the length of time the journey will take (tho if you are doing 200 miles+ you can normally knock off around 1/2 hour off its stated time)

It also has a fully updated speed camera' date=' hotel, petrol station, and most importantly KFC databases.[/quote']

Where did you get the KFC Database from, I only have poxy Mc d's on mine!!

Does anyone know where the Skoda dealership POI is stored online? or does anyone have it?

Got me a tomtom at the wkend and having John Cleese navigate me to work just puts a wry smile on my face :P

MPM :D

There was a POI file on here at one time, perhaps it's disappeared, post-forum update? I'm sure it was a 'sticky' in one of the sections

And I find that I have the celebrity voices running for a while, then revert to one of the standard ones, as they really start doing my head in...
