Whistling when moving off

Featured Replies

It's not the turbo coming onto boost, it occurs between moving off and around 1500rpm. Any thoughts - first feeling was perhaps EGR related?

It's not that loud and can only be heard if the stereo's below about 8 or so, and it doesn't seem to be affecting anything. I'm just curious more than anything :)

Cheers,

Steve

I think I have something like this on my 2010 Octavia Scout 2.0 TDI (PD). It sounds like a police siren in the distance. For the first few weeks I kept looking round for an emergency vehicle, but I've now got used to it. As you say it's at low revs, maybe up to 2000. I wondered if it was turbo related.

just had my turbo replaced last week under warranty, for exactly the same problem

I think I know which problem you've had solved though, which isn't the same as this one :)

I'm pretty sure it's not related to the turbo boosting, as it's too early in the rev range.

You're under warranty - go get yours checked out and report back :D

Suppose it could be described as a faint, faraway police siren. I'll try to get a recording of it.

I've been in cars with the 'wailing' turbo issue, and this isn't the same. As a slight aside, I've seen vehicles run with turbos sounding like that for 100k+, so it's not always a sign of impending doom...

I had this sound on my previous Octy and the present one since the day it was new - nothing to worry about. If it was the turbo on the blink, it would sound more like a screaming cat.

Is it like a sharp whistle then stops? I've got this issue as well  asked about and no one thinks its the turbo, as you've said Steve, comes in before boost. My thoughts were a hose slightly loose or spaced at one of the stupid metal collars :D

There's a faint siren noise on mine from the turbo when setting off either warm or cold, low revs - just as you describe. I've been told it's normal & nothing to worry about. Exactly the same siren noise on the old turbo before it got replaced too...

Yep likewise, if I turn the music off & listen out for it I can hear it....faint police siren. I got it checked by a fellow Briskonian and he assured me it was fine. Touchwood, all clear! :)

Yep, general and specialist advice seems to be that it's a 'characteristic' :)

Cheers guys

Steve

Good to know its a characteristic and others have experienced it  one less thing off my mind

I noticed this on mine a week or so ago. At first I thought plod or some emergency vehicle was tracking me ! 37K miles from new ( 56 plate) and heard it for the first time a week or so ago and it was not present in the previous 3 years. As you say, a very distant siren noise.

My car was serviced the other day by an independent VAG and I got him to listen to it. He could hear it as well and thought I had mostly likely had it from day one and never noticed it before, assures me nothing to worry about and no impending doom or gloom. He did not offer any clues where it was coming from and you could ONLY hear it in the car, Not when bonnet up and head stuck in engine !!

I'll add my tuppence here FWIW. My 55 plate does it too - mainly noticed it after my remap. At the last service they spotted a small hole in the turbo inlet pipe so that may be causing mine.

The "whoops there goes my turbo!" noise would appear to be noisy enough to scare passing children - there's a video round here somewhere of someone revving a stationary car and it's significantly different to the quiet whoosh I get on gentle acceleration.

Mine was more noticable too after the map.................think i'll re-check the pipework :D

Good point. My remap was done last January, However I only noticed it early this month (August) So do not beleive connected to re map but ? Interested to know if holes or leaks found in Turbo pipe work, and I will get checked as well ?
