Hello,

Thank you

Hello there and welcome to the site,

Are you saying that you left the MAF on the old airbox???

Your performance air filter if it is a cone type should be connected to the MAF which should be left in place on the Turbo pipe, so you should not need to unplug the lead to the MAF.

If this is what you have done then I am not suprised you can't start the car.

You will also need to connect a small filter to the secondary air pump plastic piping that you would of disconnected from the airbox too.

I took off Ignition Power Module that is the sensor with two connectors and it is bolted to original air filter. MAF is on the Turbo pipe and connected.

I cant find any theme where someone put air preformance filter on their 1.8T engine.

All 1.8T engines i have seen have no sensors on the air box. If you have this then I would expect you need to remove that module from the airbox and hold it in place somewhere in the engine bay so the two connectors are still connected.

You can browse through this site searching for key words like "fitting cone filter" or "fitting CAI" or words to that effect

How old is the car?

I'm wondering if you are referring to a Mk2 Octavia with the 1.8 Tsi engine (160bhp) rather than the Mk1 Octavia with the old 1.8 20vT engine?

In which case try the Octavia II part of the forum

As Bowders said, the Mk1 Octavia doesn't have any connectors on the airbox other than the multiplug to the MAF sensor which is between the airbox and the turbo.

I've just being looking in the haynes bible, and on 4A.5 (page no), diagram 2.14, there is something called an ignition power stage bolted to the airbox lid. If you read section 2 (Air cleaner and inlet system), it says turbo models have this.

Weird???

Right people!!!!

Just been googling this, and it turns out that the ignition power stage was used on early 1.8t engines before proper coilpacks were introduced. (used on MY 97-99 AEB engines).

It is similar to the old DIS modules cars used to have. Rather than having a coilpack containing the ignition coil and amplifier, the early coilpacks only contained the ignition coil. They needed a separate amplifier, which VW called the N122 Ignition power stage. It is effectively a MOSFET switch, which receives a signal from the ecu and activates the ignition coil in the relevant cylinder.

On newer 1.8t engines, the wiring goes straight from the ecu to the coilpacks, as they have the amplifiers built into them.

That is why the early coilpacks only have 3 pins and the newer ones have 4.

There are guides on the net about converting to the coilpacks we all know and love, but I can only find these for the VR6 and 2.1 R5 audi quattro engine (old skool).

You learn something new every day lol

And to the original poster, because you have disconnected the power stage on the airbox, you now have no spark, so you won't be able to start your engine

You need to reconnect the ignition stage and the car will start again. The only problem is, it is originally mounted on the airbox lid to cool it, you need to find somewhere with airflow, or bolt it to a big bit of metal i.e the bulkhead etc.
