heap of oil poured out from the metal drivers side turbo hose :-(

This just after fitting fmic too?

Yup!!

Finally back home.

It looks like the turbo has gone. It was remapped with the FMIC caked in oil and with the SMIC leak. Would the new FMIC + good seal perhaps have made it overboost or something?

With all the oil from the boost hose it looks like a new turbo anyway. Would a TD Stage 2 be a silly idea with the stock clutch even if driven gently for a while?

Yup!!

urm.. *runs and puts SMIC back on*

any more luck on been a pipe?

Definitely not a pipe popped off I am afraid. A tonne of oil spewed out from the OEM metal turbo pipe (bottom end, not the top end stuff) when we disconnected it :-(

How many miles you done with the fmic then? Im mega worried now.

Tbh you can get a stage 2 turbo, and either have it mapped to limit torque, or not map it and only map it after you've got a clutch.

I wouldn't be too worried. I'd only had it fitted for a day, but probably done 75-100 miles. I'm thinking it may have been because I had it remapped when the old SMIC was caked in oil and had that small leak, and once it was all sealed up properly it just took it over the edge or something? It was a second hand turbo from the previous owner too...

I think I will go with a stage 2 then. Should I be looking at the MD446 (PD130) or will the MD376 (PD150) fit fine with a rotation? (MD376 seems to be the stronger one?)

Might as well got pd150 ;-)

I'll do that then probably. Good bye £1000 :-(

I hope there's no other damage. I'm guessing the engine wasn't flooded with oil as it didn't go runaway at all. It still starts on key, though some white smoke does come from the crankcase breather (elephant hose mod!), not as much as when the engine was still hot yesterday when it happened though. Turbo makes a hideous loud screech just at idle!

Hm. Clive Atthowe's in Norwich are saying just leaking oil it's still hard to tell, and we should have the turbo off to see what's happened as it could be that it's exploded and got metal everywhere :-( In that case I guess it'd be new engine time as well? Ug...

I'm hoping it's no where near that bad.

Current symptoms (if you can call it that):

- It starts on the key and idles. Seems to idle OK, but haven't left it for any kind of extended period. Just a few seconds a few times.

- There's a loud screech which we presume is the turbo.

- More white smoke than usual coming from the crankcase breather, but not so much it creates any sort of huge thick smoke screen

- Quite a lot of oil poured out from the main boost hose (was dripping before we even pulled it off) on the bottom end (I think pretty much the only metal one in the OEM pipework).

- When it failed apparently the passenger said there was a muted pop, but being caught in the moment I don't actually remember it!

Hi Mark,

Yours doesn't sound as bad as what happened to mine the other week, loud pop noise followed by clouds of white smoke out the back- and I've just had a new turbo, fmic & map done.

Nothing else was wrong other than a boost leak which was rectified by a new hose. From what you've said hopefully there will be no further damage.

Regarding turbos, I've now got an Allard VT2 (hybrid PD150) and it is superb. It also comes in slightly cheaper than a TD unit.

I hope you get sorted soon.

Iain.

You are lucky it was just a loose pipe B)

I was also looking at the VT2 as a possibility.

Having trouble getting the old one off apparently, not quite as simple as expected, but I am not home so I don't know the details.

Of course, the next thing to explode will be the clutch. Ahhhhh. I'm hoping I can have it re-remapped at a lower power (like 170 where it's coping fine, not 220) for a while until I can afford a new clutch.

Old turbo is off, seems the shaft snapped and doesn't look like any metal has made its way to the engine.

The MD376 hybrid has been ordered. Apart from having to rotate the housing it should be a straight fit?

fell off??? lol how on earth did that happen im sure thats got 3 pretty big bolts on it, plus the other 2 on the egr exhaust itself. crazy times...

Yeah happened on the M1 haha. Thought my turbo had gone, so did the aa man at first.

Glad you got the turbo sorted, any excuse for some moree power :-D

bad times that mate!!! atleast its not as bad as turbo going eh! i've had that one myself :( haha

I did want a hybrid fitted in the near distant future. I wanted the FMIC and clutch sorting first though. I'll have to get it remapped very conservatively to save the clutch, upgrade the clutch, then get it re-remapped I guess. Expensive clutches :-(

im in a similar position tbh, but mines running ok at the moment so ill get the clutch then hybrid and map....hope things work out for ya pal.

TD reckons I will probably have to lose the EGR.

I didn't really want to do this though, mainly because I want to keep the anti shudder valve but also because I don't actually want to chuck out loads more NOx even if it's not tested for (says me with a decat)!

I have found that I should be able to keep the ASV by just disconnecting and blocking the vacuum pipe on top of the EGR and leaving the other in place. Is there any way to keep the EGR working with these hybrid turbos? It's in a different place to the KKK turbo apparently. Some kinda longer pipe is all that's needed? I'm sure it'll become clear when it arrives, but someone must know already? :-)

Or maybe I just wont and get the EGR CEL mapped out and not care...
