Petrol Vrs finally good mpg

Featured Replies

Had roof box on for all but last 3 months. So with roof box usually 27 ish mpg. We rarely have long 50 plus miles journey. Box off rose a little 28 to 29. Had cambelt done was a little worse. Did a long run from Surrey to Ipswich 31.5 average sticking to speed limits. Not good. Perhaps belt was tight. This weekend Surrey to palmers green and back, 2 Heathrow trips using M25. Trip to south london not worst of rush hour. 353.4 miles ÷43 litres x4.54 equals over 37 mpg. Again sat at speed limit. When on immediate mpg noticed it dropped by 5 to 10 mpg if i raised the speed to an indicated 75 or 80. Also surprised how easy and relaxing it was to sit at indicated 70. With a long run i can now see 40 mpg possible. At least until a nice stretch of road appears :-).

WOW, 40 mpg is really good for a petrol one, my 1.6 mpi using ethanol goes to 25mpg easily in urban-half urban driving (still have not tried regular petrol since ethanol here in Sweden is 40% cheaper)

I'm getting around 35mpg give or take 0.5 when I drive from Brum to Guildford down the M42/M40/A3 sat at an indicated 80mph

Good times @ 1.12 per litre for petrol at my local station!

I'm about to have this looked in to by the dealers; I seem to average 26 over a tank with mostly light progressive driving with the odd moment of holding it in gear. Motorway sat at 70 with cruise on the car struggles to get in to low 30's. I'm not sure if all my local town driving doesn't help but I am currently really struggling with MPG. The cambelt was replaced just before I picked it up - I didn't realise this can factor in to things so will ask them to check. For my mileage it is not the end of the world (7k pa) but to see mid 30's over a long trip would be nice!

Hi i have a 56 plate petrol vrs and i regulary get high 30's low 40's on a run thats with cruise at 75.

What effect does the cambelt have? I have just had mine done.

Cheers

Matt thats amazing - I am sure we would see 30 max at an indicated 80 - do you have 18"s or 17"s (17"s are lighter!) also we had Vredesstein Sessantas all round - now only on the front with Pilot Sport 2's on the rear. Sessantas are meant to have high rolling resistance Also hatch or estate - estates are heavier and possibly less aero dynamic.

Puesso - noot made 40 yet - best of 37.3 - but without the town driving and short journeys I am now sure a long run could see 40!

Weyland/baldy - well the cambelt is just a theory - it will have been tight when done and it was done soon after the box came off. I expected a greater rise in economy with the box removed . However I wonder if the car is learning it has less resistance so needs less fuel for a given speed! Weyland Your figures are like mine before this last tank. I too was worried since I assumed the box was reducing economy by 5mpg or so! (10-15%). Also is that on the maxidot - or calculated - our maxi dot is over optimistic usually - though this time it was pessimistic. Oh and as you have race blue it is the most slippery of colours - thats why we choose it!

Baldy - at 75 we would definitely be low 30's and thats just judging by the immediate maxidot which is optimistic!

Also most of the people with better mileage seem to have later cars - I wonder if there was any change between 06 and 56?

Plus with a coat of good quality wax it has even less air resistance ;):D

I'll keep an eye on the figures, it's off top the dealers in two weeks to be checked out. As I've just bought it i'm not messing about!

Well, in the next weeks I will be doing a "small trip" from Stockholm to Madrid, 3500km in total and from those I will make 1000km with ethanol and 2500 with regular petrol.

I know that using ethanol the mpg is reduced around 30% so I would expect to see 40mpg at least while on petrol since I have seen similar figures on relaxed driving for long distances even with ethanol.

Anyway I will post my results here.

Thanks!!

Hi mate, thats on 17's and on cruise normally late at night so i literally dont touch the pedals from getting on the m42 to getting on the m25

Mine's an 06 and I can get a smidge over 40mpg on a motorway run showing 70 on sat nav (about 75 on the speedo IIRC)... that's with 18" wheels and Nexen N6000 tyres if it makes a difference. Checked a few full tanks manually against the computer and it was less than 1% out on an average of around 30mpg, so that might not be spot on but should be pretty close :)

Mine's an '07 and I usually get ~26-27 around town.

Now I have the mechanical knowledge/capability of a piece of ham, but I heard (can't remember where....possibly on here somewhere?) that your air filter can make a difference to fuel economy - is that true?

Tyres all have different rolling resistance so will affect mpg. Dirty air filter will also think about how much harder it would be to run with a face mask then how much harder if its blocked. Happy to have got 37 glad to hear more is possible. Also all cars are slightly different. Hence tolerences in specs

You seem to be really unlucky. Like the other replies, I have a summer avg of 37-38mpg cruising on A roads and this easily goes up to low 40s on motorways cruising at indicated high 70s. Avg still good including regular fast starts fm junctions or lights and 3rd gear blasts around slower traffic. The air filter is yet to be changed after 3 years and it still pulls very well. Interesting to see if the dealer finds anything amiss.

Drove down A68 from Edinburgh to home last week, 116 miles of very undulating road, through towns, behind tractors, roadworks, the lot. At or a little above the speed limit and display said 41.7mpg. Very bad as I got 42.3 on the way up! I am well impressed with these figures, surely there can't be another petrol car of similar size and performance to touch these type of figures. Car has done 6000 miles now so is probably "loosened up". Recently bought a Michelin digital tyre guage and spot on tyre pressures do make a difference.

Out of interest what pressures are you running. We are usually 34 front 32 rear.

33-34 all round here

That's really impressive. I've driven down there in a 2.0L diesel Volvo and got about 47mpg. Do they still have a Gatso speed camera about every five miles just where its safe to overtake on that road?

I get 42 mpg (filling to filling) if I get the chance to go on a reasonably long trip and use the cruise control uninterrupted. I can get the displayed consumption down to 48 mpg!

Typically though I do a lot of shorter trips (home to work 13 miles) and on average including the odd heavy footedness am getting 34 mpg which I am pretty happy with to be honest..

They certainly do have cameras on that road, especially north of the border. Saw one recently that had been burned down, old tyre filled with petrol soaked rags placed over the camera does the trick I'm told. As to tyre pressures, it's the recommended ones of 30 front and 32 rear on the Continentals it came with.

Nothing like a speed camera to draw out the anarchist in all of us . . . I wonder how many people have not thought about to destroy one at some point or another?

Not perhaps a no brainer though . . . http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/manchester/5320092.stm

Get 43 mpg on the TSI VRS on the A roads to the Welsh West coast from here. Also had over 45 mpg average going from Worcester to Canary Wharf. The total of the distance traveled since fill up and range left added up to 570 miles.

Using lots of predictive driving stable cruising at the legal limit and there is a lot of 50 mph road works which means travelling at 54 mph, which co-incidently is nearly exactly 1700-1800 rpm I think where the turbo is just starting full boost and therefore a sweet spot for economy. Run slightly higher pressures on the 18 inch tyres ie 32 front, 35 rear I recall.

VRS is wife's car and I reckon my 1.8TSI DSG, when delivered should do around 50 mpg and show a range well of 600 miles. Who needs diesels now petrols have direct injection too!

Did some research on briskoda and vw forums. Golf gti settings are 35 all round. Makes no sense to have lower pressures on heavier car. Upped then to this. Wonder what leon are set at from the factory. Thats some great economy there. Any town work averages 26 for me. Saying that our mini cooper did the same but on a run to lake district including lots of 3rd gear work when up there for a week average of 40. If i ever see 40 out of Vrs i will post :-)

Great mileage there. Been checking and golf gti mkV factory setting is 35 psi. I will try that. Why does a heavier car have lower pressures. Anyone know what leon fr runs on. If i ever reach 40 mpg you will be the second to know

Octavia may have lower front tyre pressure as it may have less weight on the front wheels due to the overhang over the rear wheels.

This is actually the Octavia's biggest flaw and detraction for acceleration, handling etc although great for practical carrying capacity.

Bring on 4 wheel drive versions with 270 hp litre TSI, that will be great and this is probably why the police are going for 4 wheel drive Superbs in addtion to petrol VRSs.
