Handbrake Cable Change

Featured Replies

Hi Yall,

After having a good clean up of my wheels yesterday i noticed my hadbreak is only biting on one side and my MOT is due in 2 months.

Popped the cover off behing the handbreak to find that side looks like the cable had streched,

my technical decribing of it.

The bar that holds the 2 cables on the end of the lever, the drivers side of the bar is further to the front of the car than the passenger side. (A LOT)

Would you say the driver side cable is streched?

Are they easy to change?

Can get piccys if you want.

thanks for any help.

It doesn't mean the cable is stretched too far. If you rear brake pads are too worn maybe they need changing and that would take up the slack. The bar, as you say that carries the cables will be lopsided when the handbrake is off and that is nothing to worry about either as there are no pull off springs at the caliper end. From what I remember the cable is not attached to the grooved bar, it just lays in the groove and balances itself out when you pull up the handbrake lever. If as you say only one rear brake is working then you need to address that problem 1st. , then the handbrake adjustment comes last.

One rear break with the handbrake. The cable seems more slack than the other. This is why i am wondering if the cable has streched as the wear on the rear brakes seem pretty even to have a failed caliper.

I had planned to change the rear pads and discs this month just because they could do with doing. would you say do this first then look into the 'Current Issue'

That's what soot1e is telling you !

Soot1e, do you mind explaining what you mean? as i think i have the wrong end of the stick.

I said nothing about Moving the Adjuster, i was asking if you think the cable is stretched from what i described.... .which happened to be evidence taken from the adjuster.

All's you have told me is don't adjust the them from there until you have explored the options....

Errrrr......... i'm exploring the options........... 'Is the cable stretched?'

Sort the back brakes first, check the pads arent stuck in the carriers.

If you are doing ANY work on the rear brakes--------------------Handbrake OFF. and adjust the handbrake after you have finished, if necessary.
