ideas for a track car

Featured Replies

right people, i'm after a track car but not sure what to get. i've got around £1000 to spend!

originally it was goin to be a weekend only toy but with me working away i'm swinging towards using it on the road aswell so SWMBO still has the use of my vrs, so it needs to be reliable, easy tuneable for a few extra bhp, light and pretty nippy!

i've looked at allsorts from e36 325's (drifting), 205 mi16's, s14's, mr2 turbo's and the odd escort rs2000.

i'm after some idea's from either people in the same boat or just general idea's etc

it will be stripped with just the 2 front seats left etc.

cheers in advance

mk3 golf gti ;-)

I have a clio RSI thats good fun would also recomend a 1700 puma both v quick and easy to live with. Puma would be at the top end of your budget.

I looked at mr2's and celica's. You could also try saxo's if u dont mind looking loke a chav lol :giggle:

sorry clive golf just not quick enough and its way to clean to strip

used to own a saxo many moons ago and would'nt even consider one! (biggest pile of tosh i've ever driven!)

have considered a 16v clio but reliability's not that great from past experience's and friends who've owned them?

the puma would be out of my budget and i can't see myself driving one as a daily :giggle:

MX5's are plentiful these days at the this price, rear drive as well. Or hows about a Clio 172, a few will be for sale around £1k now.

i have seen a few mx5's and like the idea of light weight rear drive but as a daily i'm not sure the boot/back seats would carry my work gear unfortunately.

not thought of the 172 to be honest will have a look into them

cheers

The Mk2 Phase 1's are the best ones to go for on track as they have a cable throttle and can be made lighter than the "Cup" after some stripping out . If you register on www.cliosport.net there are plenty of ideas on there.

My clio has never given me any probs at all and it gets abused! Puma is not out you budget and would be my choice. My dad has my old one now has 128k on the clock

and runs like new ben for a ride up the dales today with him and asked for it back but i got told to go jump lol What abou pug 309 gti?

i've owned a couple of 309's and really enjoyed driving them actually and had forgotten about them tbh, so they are now on my list :giggle:

Proton coupe/hatch 1800 mitsu twincam 130bhp and evo 1,2,3 bits fit them.

First gen rx7 ;)

Not that I think about sub 1k cars much

Have a look on retro rides there is loads of old skool stuff on there that would be good track/everyday cars

AS already mentioned mk1 172. Or Saxo VTS.

172

saxo

mk1 Focus 1.8 Zetec with Eibach springs, 17 inch pro race 1.2s with Parada Spec 2s, disks all-round with ST170 front setup, ST170 manifold+miltek decat+blueflame catback & interior removed?

:p

106 GTi cammed and throttle boddied ;)

thats what am doing next!

i have a 205 Mi16 and its great fun, cheap to maintain although they can suffer driveshaft issues if you dont tilt the engine.

had a mate with one and it was stupidly quick :giggle:

i've seen a couple so will be keeping my eye on them. does yours have power steering? just wondered what they were like without, i guess with them being pretty light you would'nt notice much difference without it?

If you can get one Si they are a fantastic car. I owned one for 3yrs & regretted selling It, but I doubt you'd get a good runner for £1k

When I put carbs on my 309gti I had to remove the complete power steering unit as the new Inlet manifold wouldn't fit due to the power steering pulley. I fitted a standard rack & belt to suit & TBH I never missed the power steering. Was a bit heavier parking up, but when rolling It was fine.

just been having a chat with a mate of mine who races both a 600bhp evo time attack car and a seat leon touring car and he's talked me into getting a 306 gti6 (or the lightweight version 306 rallye) as thats what he started off in and could'nt rate it highly enough :)
