L.H. Drive Fabia to UK?

Featured Replies

We have a Mk1 Fabia 1.9tdi Comfort, left hand drive, Spanish registered, which we have owned from new in 2001. It has covered 143,000 KM, always serviced by the VW group main dealership in Marbella and is in good order and we love it.

We are considering returning to the UK, permanently and are trying to work out the options for transport if we do get back to Blighty.

We may be able to sell it here,in Spain but in the present economic climate won't get a lot for it and we are then faced with buying something reliable in the U.K.

Has anyone any actual costings for changing the headlights to UK spec and converting the speedo. from KM to miles?

Is there anything else which needs doing to allow it to be registered onto GB plates and how much does that cost?

Headlights and speedo is all you need to do, then get it MOT'd on the VIN number then just register it in the UK.

I am sure the rear fog light will also need to change sides as well.

Rear fog Light - Just run a link wire from the live side to the other side this now gives you BOTH rear fog lights which are much safer, at least other road users can determine how wide you are and whether you are a motorbike or a car.

Thanks for the info so far - what about the speedometer, currently in KPH?

You can buy speedo healers for electronic operated speedos as fitted to fabias , ibizas etc - they use them for motorbikes. Once set up, your kph marks will actually be reading mph numbers.

if they display MPH on them to show your speed im sure you wont have to change them ,

If it's the same as most of the hire cars I have used abroad - the european models ONLY have kph on the dial.

Worth noting beam deflectors wont pass an MOT. They are a temp measure only and block off the high part of the beam, they do not give the correct beam pattern.

I live in La Marina (Nr Guardamar de Segura, Alicante province) I have a 2001 RHD Fabia 1.4 combi and did the whole operation in reverse last year. To pass the ITV, I had to purchase a set of new LHD headlights, which cost 220 euros(not OEM)

I still have my original Skoda RHD headlights. Should you be thinking of buying a pair for £100 and have a method of collection, email me on [email protected]

There is no need to lawfully change your speedometer from KPH to MPH, as there are plenty of imports with KPH speedometers in United Kingdom.(Relative has such a vehicle.)

However it's good to know what speed your doing especially in built-up area's i.e. towns, so a conversion speedometer sticker placed onto your speedometer, would be good.

Your headlights dip and focus to wrong side for this country, so a headlight conversion lens needs to be fitted over your existing headlights, OR

change to United Kingdom headlight's either buying new one's or second-hand from a car breakers yard.

Your right rear foglight can be wired fairly easily (I did mine) from the left one, that is now working.

Not sure if you want to change driving sides, but must be possible, to move foot pedals / electrics/ steering column/ dashboard facia and a whole host of other things not listed here.emoticon-0148-yes.gif

They may be a temporary measure, but they will pass an MOT if they are fitted correctly.

One of my old cars failed an MOT because I had used red repair tape over a rear light.( the proper see through lense repair tape )

I was told at the time that a temporary fix was not accepted when presented for an MOT.
