New struts and springs

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

just wanted to ask you about this. I have changed my front and rear struts as well as all the springs. I have settle for nothing cheap, but Bilstein and Eibach. Suspension feels really lively, but I couldn't have noticed that one side - drivers side is a bit lower than the passanger side is. I am talking like 1.5 cm so it is really noticeable. Also I could hear little noise coming from here and there, just like metal rubbing. By the way I have done everything as I was supposed to and changed all the parts for new ones - top strut mounts, bump stops and etc.

Anybody have an idea what I have done wrong?

Your help or ideas get really appreciated.

Did you replace all the nuts on the top of the strut? If one of those nuts is left out it would make it about 1.5cm lower on one side I would've thought.

There is an inner nut that holds the top mount and bearing down on to the spring cup and then another nut which holds the whole damper assembly into the cup on top of the suspension turret.

Replaced the lot mate and I can that is officially real ******* job to do, with all different sizes nuts. Collegue at work reckons that I have misplaced the rear spring - most likely the one which is higher. The front ones are sitting nicely in their strut cups, but rear ones - you probably know that there is no cup to fit, they just on axle freely, don't they? Gotta take them all apart as I am going to fit big brake kit, which involve changing both wheel housings and replace rear callipers for VRS ones.

In the meantime any solution or idea is welcome.

rears sit on a spring perch.

sounds like a missing inner nut,

if not then a dodgy spring.

is yours a vrs, as eibach do not make a spring for the vrs....non vrs ones will fit but are not weighted correctly and cause dangerous handling characteristics?

Non VRS model, TDI estate 2001 with 30mm Eibach lowering springs. Will check in the evening as soon as I get home. Let you know how Igot on.

Thanks, Martin

After checking every single strut individually I can say that something is wrong, everything is as it meant to be and I haven't missed anything. It took me few hours to take it apart, but I can officially say that one side is still lower from 0.5 cm to 1.5 cm.

No idea what to do next. All I can do is swap them around - mainly on front shocks it could work.

have you measured the lengths of each front spring, to check its not a dodgy spring?

and you def have the inner front strut nut on both sides?

Did the springs come as a package or seperately? Maybe one of them is not the right one for the car

100% sure that nothing is missing or got left out.

Will know for sure over the weekend as I am planning to change my weel housing and fit big brake kit.

Personally think it's the top strut mounts which I have changed also . . . . . product bought from EuroCarParts . . . .

Anyway. thanks to everyone for their bit to help
