Understanding Tyres

Featured Replies

Because of the topics of ride comfort and much debate about the best tyres, can someone enlighten me as a tyre novice, as to what the best tyres would be for our beasts, and are all Yetis supplied with the same factory fitted tyres ?? Could someone elaborate and provide a quick tryre lesson ??

All tyres are a series of compromises.

So what do you mean by "best"? Dry grip, damp grip, aquaplane resistance, lifespan, road noise, ride comfort, since you're asking about a Yeti for sealed or loose surfaces...

I don't know much about Yetis, but as a generalisation most "mass market" cars are supplied with "which maker gave us the best price for 60_000 tyres this month?"

Best ride quality for dealing with everyday driving bumps and potholes I guess

Hi!

I don't think you can decide which tires (brand) the car will be delivered with (unless you are prepared to pay some extra to get the exact tires you want, then it might be possible). You can decide whether you want 16 or 17 inch rims (steel or alloy), and the 16 inch will probably have a better ride comfort becauase of the "higher" tire walls as explained in another thread. The 17 inch alloys are really more an appearance thing (says the guy that ordered his SM with 17 inch rims:p) even though I still feel that the ride is comfortable enough for me. The tires will probably be geared towards on-road motoring ( I had Dunlop SP1's) and I don't thing yoy can get proper off-road tires from the factory.

I must admit I dont remember being given an option of a 16" or 17" it was just provided as 17" fitted as standard. I guess I wont get a feel for the tyres until my beast eventually arrives.

Again there's more info on this subject in the Tech Guide My link

I guess that depends on the country and specs. By reading this forum I get the impression that very much fewer options are available in the UK than in the rest of Europe, so perhaps the wheel size is also one of these limitations.

In Finland the Active (S) comes standard with 16 inch steel rims (16 inch alloys available as option), but the Adventure (SE) and Expericene (Elegance) come standard with 17 inch alloys but you can choose 16 inch alloys for no extra cost if you want to.

Tim,

The English language manual on the Czech website was upgraded to allow chains on the REAR on 4WD Yeti's with the standard tyres supplied - both 16" and 17". In other words, if you can live with the possibility of being able to fit chains on the rear only - it is possible with the stock wheelsand tyres. That will cover the Alpine requirements and most others.

That does not really help the FWD only monsters, but if people were concerned about that, would they not have bought 4WD?

There is a whole detail section in this week's Autocar magazine on tyres: Their Tyre Test 2010. Have a look at that.

Hi Agerbundsen,

thanks, had already amended the guide but possible not to clearly, so I have made some adjustments.

Which is all interesting because my Elegance has alloys with 16 inch tyres (215 50 R 16 Dunlops)

YetiSP2 is seriously sounds as if they mistakenly gave you a development mule instead of a proper Yeti. Sorry to hear about all your woes, but 16" wheels on an Elegance?!? Something sounds seriously amiss with that car of yours.

Bizarre :wonder: which style of alloys do you have then? and the tyre size you state is not a recognised size used on a Yeti unless it's a typo. Be interested to see some pic's of this beast of yours

Hi I really have a difficult time with your question and I sell and fit through myself and other staff members over 25,000 tyres a year aswell as brakes, exhausts, aircon and services on vehicles.

I can only say that through my career of over twenty years doing this there is no perfect tyre for a car or person it comes down to what you drive like and expect from your car and drive , i have supplied on more than one occassion tyres to different customers on the same car with simular usage and one says black the other white it really is a individual choice.

Things to look out for on tyres now is the correct size i.e 225 / 50 R 17 94 W which breaks down to 225 mm wide 50% of the width 17 rim diam and the 94 is load & torque range the R is radial and the W is speed 168mph now the next part is intresting and something just happening to all tyres now sold in the uk its the energy label which says all new tyres sold from the end of 2012 must come with energy rating-style labels that score them for noise, economy and wet weather handling hopefully to give the consumer some more information when deciding, there has been a change also within the last year which is the S rating at the end of a product code which is a decibel rating and will force Far Eastern firms to improve their quality as some have been using older patterns (very noisy) and recycled oil to farm a substandard product into the market I personnally will not stock a certain countries tyre as the product at the moment is inferior to others in terms of roundness and runout when fitted.

I hope this helps in some way and my next tyre will be from the continental stable its called semperit which is the only brand offering a puncture and damage warranty free of charge at the moment but you will need to look for them as they are a chosen supplier item at the moment

Peter

If i had it here then I would be hopefully it will never come back. The tyres are definitely 16 inch (that seems to be the size they fit to S models) and the design is 5 (or maybe 6) wide spokes. Don't have a brochure to hand so can't say for certain what they are like.

This must be a misbuild or non UK spec car. Have you approached the What Car magazine helpline to assist with your rejection? They love stories of misbuilds and 'freak' cars.

No need, for once I can use my professional skills for my own benefit.

This is a link to the international accessories brochure not the restricted SUK version, if your alloys are Yeti they will be in there.

Bear in mind it's not here so I can't look out of the window to check but I think they are "Moon".

May be able to confirm later if the dealer deigns to speak to me.

Assuming the Elegance has 17" wheels, they are not Moon, as they are 16" - Spitzbergen are more likely.

You don't get such a thing as 16" Spitzberg wheels. They only come as 17".

That's very interesting if they are as there not available in the UK, normally the Moon is fitted to the European Ambition spec (SE equivalent). Been trying to get a set of moon alloys myself but SUK won't import them :(

Be very interesting to see what's printed on your cars data sticker as to it's spec (found in the front of the service book or on the boot floor). I take it the rest of your car matches a UK Elegance spec :wonder:

From the brochure;

Spitzberg 17" alloys (not fitted :wonder: )

4 spoke leather multifunction steering wheel

Bi-xenon light

Boarding Spots in wing mirrors

Corner fogs

Lumber support front seats

ESP

leather seats

Glasses storage case

Heated front seats

HHC

Light assist

Auto dim rear mirror and rain sensor wipers

Bluetooth

Right, that is what I think I implied :smirk:
