poorer mpg after service

Featured Replies

i had my furby serviced last month and before service i was getting 38-50 mpg, but after my service the mpg is only averaging 30-35mpg, any reason for this?

hmm - what's your power like? any noticeable difference? you moving along more brisk than normal? if it was a petrol i'd have suggested the carburettor being tuned to high.. but diesel engines are different. Perhaps there is too much fuel being injected when you tap the accelerator. No idea how, but its a possibility. Dunno, what else to suggest at the moment.. lets leave it to the masses on this forum and bounce ideas off each other. The only constructive thing i can suggest is to take back in and tell them you're not happy. Did you take it to a Skoda dealer for the service?

took it to the skoda dealer, feels ok to drive, not any differnet to before the service, its a quick as its always been, only use shell diesel extra, maybe the last batch of fuel was dodgy, may try bp fuel

Was it a 10K service? If so then they would have only changed your oil and filter so nowt there that would effect your economy. Ambient temp does though to a certain degree as does fuel quaility as you say.

nope it was the anual inspection service, will try a differnet brand of fuel to see if it makes any difference

How many miles have you done then chas?

it my rate it will take years to run in:D

i only have 6 mile round trip to work,

how many miles to prperly run in the car do i need to do ross?

Things usually start loosening up after 10-12,000 miles, I noticed a jump in economy then, even with my mods.

I have seen 2 prices in my skoda dealership, one for a 10,000 mile oil change at 70 quid and the 10,000 mile service priced at 175 quid, do i need to get the service done for the warranty or will the oil change do?

Depends on the age/mileage of your car.

The cheaper price is for a 10,000 mile service (if your car has done 10,000 miles)

The more expensive of the two if for the Annual service (if you car is a year old and hasnt done 10,000 miles.

if you hit 10000 miles before a year is up you need an oil service, but you will also may require an annual inspection service to keep your warranty, so if you hit 10000mile just before the year you might as well get the annual service as this also includes the oil change.

mines only covered 5400 miles in 1 year so i had the annual service which cost

And if you have a 10k service you dont need another service for another 10,000 miles or another year.

The service is either on time OR mileage, not both.

Strangely enough, I've noticed this too. Had my car serviced early December (12 months) with something like 9800 miles on the clock, and since it's been serviced, hasn't been getting the mileage out of the tank.

Power and performance seems the same, although it does feel "tighter" again - not like it was brand new, but not as loose as when it went in...? No real complaints. I just put it down to whatever tweakery they may perform in the annual service.

Can't say I've noticed any differences at all..on 14k now. The only things that seem IMHO to alter the figures are 1) your right hoof, and 2) the sort of driving that you're doing, ie 'round town only, out in the wilds, motorway cruising or a mixture of all 3 combinations.

Don't really subscribe to this more miles = better consumption. Remember coming down to Brunt's back in April..300miles on the clock, mixed and varied speeds/driving, average consumption for the trip a quite staggering 57.6mpg!

Total average consumption reading 49.6 at present...excluding a certain little drive in Angelsey 4 weeks ago. ;)

Theres not alot to an annual service really, its an oil and filter and an inspection (levels ans tyre pressure etc).

Something similar has happened to mine.

it wnet in last week to have a spring in the clutch pedal replaced, because everytime I used the clutch it was giving a dreadful creaking noise.

Since the pedal has been fixed, the car now lurches after a gear change(specifically 1st - 2nd and 2nd - 3rd) and I think that the engine feels far more laggy than it used to. I have also now noticed that it is not so quick to lose revs, have noticed on a few blasts that changing from 3rd to 4th at high reves, the revs are still stitting high as I select 4th, whereas previously they would already have dropped right down.

Annoying as I now have to go back to the dealer and explain these things - and I know they will think I am making it up!!

Any ideas?

Sounds like the clutch switch may well not be in properly or faulty.

Do you have cruise control?

Even though in isolation (i.e. if I'd never read this forum) I am happy with the economy of my Furby, I'm beginning to wonder if theres something wrong with it, as I just cannot get close to the figures some people here are claiming.

On my trip to work for example, the usual figure at this time of year is about 40 MPG, and that is a 7 mile trip, 2 miles of country roads, 2 miles of slow dual carriageway, 2 miles of faster dual carriageway and 1 mile of city centre driving.

Only if I manage to keep it at something like 60-70 mph on a dual carriageway or motorway do I manage to get it to hit the 50's and even then only if its for a good few miles.

When out on a blat, my typical figure seems to be about 35 - 40 MPG, and this is usually driving a mixture of village/town centres, and A/B roads out in the country, and this is revving it out whenever possible. It is this figure I am most pleased with considering this style of driving would be considered by some to be "thrashing" it as much as possible given the type of roads. Lowest I've had it on the road on a blat is about 32 MPG, and that was a very twisty A road with hairpin bends and very few long straights.

One thing I will say is that when I drive I seldom ever if ever let the revs drop below 1800 rpm.

Autocar tested the Furby and they say their average was around the same as what I get overall, yet people here claim to get much higher on a regular basis and I also get the impression people would consider themselves to drive briskly, so, is my economy anything to worry about (I dont know, because I find it quite good personally considering)?

Sounds about right to me Paul, I think we just got a load of grannies on here ;)

 hahaha, so true!! :D

Thanks for re-assuring me Ross, although I have to say, I didnt think there was anything unusual about driving hard and getting less than 40, but I had to check ;)

Went out for a short blat before and returned a superb 27.5 MPG on the computer

there's nowt wrong with driving conservatively ;) Anyhow, this has been discussed in another thread somewhere regarding fuel econonmy and the reasons for it are very long and varied. but if you're still getting poor mpg and you really think it is the service that has done it, take the car back in.

However, check your tyre pressures. etc. see if they've changed things. Do you have the air-con switched on? heated seats on? heated mirrors on? rear window heater element on? windows open? a lot of weight in the car? There are literally lots of things which can drag down the mpg of the mighty fabia. Also, cold weather doesn't really help - when the warm spell comes later this week you may notice a big difference.

Thanks for that Ross. I don't have cruise control, and I am begining to find myself driving around it - but I am still a bit peeved at it - makes me look like a rubbish driver :D

Paul, I am the same as you - my average consumption is almost never above 45mpg at the very best. Sure, i see the 100 + mpg on the instantaneous read out occaisionally, but that dosent really count does it?

I only ever get about 300 - 350 miles from a tank. I have long ago accepted that this car is a diesel because of the accessible torque and low insurance group, and is nothing to do with economy - because frankly - mine isnt really economical at all :( But then again, it is a quick car, and I do drive it like one, so what else would I expect :D
