broadband question

Featured Replies

Using a little bit of investigative power ;) I think I've found the reason. The screenshot below is of my USB speedtouch connection monitoring program, and I've circled the offending thing. It appears that my bandwidth for receiving is locked at 8128, when I'm connecting at 11520, effectively. Dropping me by over 300kb. What I've circled cannot be altered by just typing in the box, its a default somewhere... Now the question is, anyone know a nice sneaky way for me to tamper with this figure? There's probably something in the .ini files maybe? Not sure what I can do now but at least I believe I've found the causation. :D

surely I've not stumped eveyone with this one, have I? :P

That figure looks about right to me as the maximum the line could support, but not necessarily what you are getting. Considering how close you are to the exchange it will be higher.

8Mb is possible but generaly not offered in the UK at the moment for home connections.

Additionally the other figures on the screenshot suggest you had just connected when you will generally see a higher speed than is realistic. Think about large downloads how they start with a fairly fast speed and then slow down. I'd be curious to see what the figures say after you had been connected for an hour or so.

Jason, I apear to have the same modem, and despite mu connection being a 512K one the figures are identicle to what you have shown.

Its OK, I'm just wondering if the default settings on my connection have been deliberately "de-tuned"? William, sounds like you're on 1MB too then? I originally was going for 512 as well, but my ISP had only recently decided to offer 1mb too, it just seems its not twice as fast as 512! :grumpy:

No I am on 512K broad band, it is the only speed offered by Tesco Internet.
