How Quiet is a vRS Furby at Motorway Speeds?

Featured Replies

I'm thinking about changing my car (Focus 1600 ghia) and am considering the Fabia vRS amongst my shortlist.

My question is, how quiet is the Furby vRS when used at legal speeds on the motorway? One of the reasons I am looking to change is the tyre roar / road noise my current car suffers from (it does have 17" wheels, which doesn't help).

cheers

Peter

Furby isn't too bad either - again concrete roads are a pain.

Thanks for your reply (to both my posts).

Do you happen to know how refined the Furby vRS is compared to the Octy vRS? My gut feels says the bigger car will be more refined. more comfortable and quieter.

Thanks

Yes it is as that it how it was designed from the outset. Just compare the Focus to a Fiesta (maybe a bad analogy given Fords reputation for build quality).

You're right Peter.

The Octy is a firm but smooth ride and then you look at the speedo and think oops.

The Furby feels more skittish and the acceleration feels more violent.

Both have their positive and negative points.

Ah, interesting. Being over the hill (41), the Octy seems interesting. I see from other posts that the mpg is good, esp. compared to the wife's car (a Zafira GSi - 24.6mpg  - still, she only does a low mileage and we need one 7 seven seater in the house and it's a lovely car otherwise!!).

Decisions, decisions, decisions - do I see if I can get a new one for

I think the furby is very steady and quite quiet on the motorways. Ragging of the engine is a nice thing to hear, but after that the noise dies down. Quiet cool!

Can't really comment on vRS's but our Octavia is noisier than the Fabia at Motorway speeds.

The Octy's biger cabin and large hatch seems to amplify road and wind noise more than the Furby.

I find the Fabia quite quiet on the motorway, compared to other cars... But then I dont travel a lot of motorway miles :)

My Fabia is quiet enough on the motorways - 5th gear, pulling 2.5Ks at 70 (and a bit ;)) I've been forced to listen to road noise for a week or so since my Pioneer fell into a coma. but its not been unpleasant at all. I'd much rather have my music drowning it out though. :D

If your planning on a vRS then the spring setup is udoubtadly going to affect the road noise (not to mention the tyre choice! aghh), but view it like this.

The vRS Fabia is acceptable on Motorways and not much worse than my TDCi Mondeo (only noticably worse on concrete), however it does have a great blend which not many other cars have of cruising (2k rpm at 70 in 6th), acceleration is very quick even when stock, usually 8.5 secs and remapped 6.5-7.0 & ridiculous ammounts of torque, build quality is up to VW standards as are parts (it doesnt break unlike Fiat's), It's exclusive, I challenge you to see more than 1 vRS a week, Its got a fairly large boot (best in class) and 60/40 split rear seats for extra room, 5 doors, excellent handling for a small car (not as good as a Hot Hatch, but then much smoother), MPG 50+ is achievable unlike most manufacturers claims. The list goes on but you get the picture...

Oh and the insurance group, only 9!

Don't forget tyres make a big difference to the road noise. I've just changed from budget tyres to some mid-range softer/grippier ones and the road noise is significantly less. My Fabia is pretty quiet and refined at 70mph :D

I have just returned from a trip to carslile for xmas. Did 600+ miles in 3 days, including 400 of them on the M6, I am well impresed how refined it is at 70mph.

I didn't have the radio on, as I was taking me mom with me and she hates jazz! but all the same not too bad!

Posted on the "how quiet is octy vrs" thread about this. I've got Yokohama AVS Db tyres on my audi. They're specially developed to be quiet and they're great. They're the same compound rubber as teh AVS sport so they grip well too. And only

My Fabia vRS has a high level of road noise compared to my old Mk4 Golf, smooth tarmac is ok but on concrete surfaces it is very noisy. It runs Michelin Primacy tyres that apparently are noisy compared to others. The engine is nice and quiet at speed but is a bit gruff whilst accele

rating. Wind noise is nice and low and the suspension is quiet.
