Seat Leon, Cupra vs Cupra R

Featured Replies

I'm not thinking of jumping ship or anything, but does anyone know, or know where i can find out, what the physical differences are between the Leon Cupra and the Leon Cupra R ?

think a cupra has 180bhp and the R has 225............................could be wrong though

Yea vRS Dovit is right, other minor changes eg the bodykit and larger alloys iirc too

plus i think the interior "aquired" some more badges :D lol

I loved the Curpa R, great fun and lightening quick

If it is the latest modell, the cupra has the 240bhp TFSI lump, the cupra R the 265bhp lump (same as the S3)

The FR has the same engine as the golf GTI mk VI = 211bhp

The Seat website's pretty pants (who'd have thought anyone could beat skoda to the title of crappest website in the biz :giggle: ) but it claims like magic mentions, 240ps vs 265ps. But thats not many horses for the ~£5k price difference, there must be more to it than just the remap (i think the engine hardware's all the same, k04 turbo etc.).

I just can't figure out what the extra pennies are for. £5k buys a lot of uprated ARBs, uprated shocks & springs etc. etc. so where does the extra go :S

if its mk1 then lots of differences,

cupra r hand built in spain......i think thats good

bigger brakes, diff suspension, bushes, rack, ESP, cast wishbones thicker arbs, wider track at front etc, engine is also higher spec than cupra ie bam engine code with ko4 turbos, uprated block and either 210 bhp on early models and 225bhp on later models, r style interior and a different bodykit and 18" wheels which i love...some for sale on here at mo.....mmmmm

that should sum it up at bit.

Imo i would love a cupra r, i think that why i have modded my vrs so much as i really want a cupra r as well and the vrs is my way of a happy compromise

They are nicer cars to be honest, but a well modded cupra can be as good a car if not better than a standard cupra r.....like my vrs B)

I was under the impression there was no cupra anymore. Just cupra r and fr? And the cupra r has a smaller intercooler than a s3.

Matt

......they both have really really snug seats, not very good if you have a fat bottom !

No idea about the differences between Cupra, and Cupra R, but i'll defo recomend the Cupra R. If you don't get one, you'll always look and wish you had.

Moving from the vRS will be a huge difference. The vRS is all soft and cuddly, the Cupra R is a wild snorting beast.

If you want something practical, sensible, and economical, DONT buy a Cupra R. If you want something with rock hard suspension, that corners on rails, eats tyres and fuel, goes like sh## off a shovel, realigns your insides every time you stop, struggles with the power and never stops bringing a smile to your face, buy a Cupra R.

I'd sell my vRS in a heart beat, i'd be gutted if the Cupra R had to go.

cupra r standard vs vrs standard, as said no contest however modified mk1 vrs against cupra r.......cupra r isnt really a beast anymore.

Until you mod the Cupra R.

See i don't think i could live with the Cupra form factor. My Vrs estate is a bit of a jack of all trades, i can have one car and it does everything i currently want or need.

If Skoda offered the Cupra K04 engine in a hot Octy Vrs i'd have that, but if money was no object i think i'd transplant the 5-cyl TSi out the Audi TT-RS.

EDIT: p.s. Lummox your car is very tastefully done, you've a very good eye for design

What is it you need to do, that a Cupra wont allow you to do?

I can get shopping and a pram in the boot quite happily. Rear seats hold 2 adults comfortably. If anything the annoying strut braces of the vRS make the Cupra the better bet for larger loads.

The only bit the Leon doesn't do is carry misc houseload loads:

  • new outdoor table & chairs last week
  • run to the tip last week
  • >2 metre long bulky box containing a ladder ~2 weeks ago
  • 14 sleeping bags ~2 weeks ago
  • 2x black labradors ~3 weeks ago... the list goes on :giggle:

I've owned hatch form factor before (still do i guess, have a mk4 golf too currently) but it doesn't compare with the "no sweat" load carrying ability of the octy. I don't even think about how i'm going to get things home anymore. It's brilliant! It's rare i have to faff about putting the back seats down.

To be honest that's only the half of it, i like that i have so many cubby holes in the rear, my false boot floor hides everything from those "green" reusable carrier bags for life Tesco dish out, to some tools. The cubby's at the side hide everything from high vis vest to quick detailer / mf cloth, wd40 and duct tape etc.

Then there's the perm live socket for the cooler when we go camping. The list really does go on :giggle:

Until you mod the Cupra R.

Well then its just horses for courses.....a modded lcr does not automatically become faster than a modded vrs, they are the same basis really..

dont get me wrong, i love the lcr, just suprises me how little people seem to know about them on here, considering they are the seat version of our car.

Well, the LCR has 30 or 45 more horses (depending on whether you get the 210 or 225bhp version) to start with, and a bigger turbo. The LCR also has fantastic brakes, and stiffer suspension. And it doesn't suffer with the loose back end of the vRS.

I'd want to upgrade suspension and brakes on my vRS before touching the power. Yet my (225bhp) LCR is modified (chip, filter, exhaust), and the standard car feels more than up to the job.

That said, my vRS has ~80k on the clock, so maybe my suspension is on its last legs, and new shocks/springs might give me the confidence im currently missing in the car.

The stock Vrs suspension/handling setup IMO is terrible, and to get it up to my expectations you need to do a lot, i agree entirely though, before doing anything to the Vrs like increasing power, you need to get it to handle properly.

I know the difference! hence my original post on this thread, im talking about a stock lcr against a modded vrs, mine for example has full tt/r32/lcr running gear inc brembos, with further mods like castor adjustment and polybushing throughout. I also run coilovers, full uprated arbs, a wider front track like the lcr and power of an lcr so IMO my cars handling will ......dare i say be better than the stock lcr.

Once you do the same mods to the lcr, the cars should run very similarly, again, a stock bam engine is ok, however once you take an auq octy engine, uprate internals, fit a big turbo setup etc it will outperform a stock lcr across the range. Of course if you do the same to the lcr you will end up with 2 cars that are very similar again lol.

At 80k they will have seen better days, try the weitec coilovers, kw quality for half the price (made by kw)

Thats pretty much my point.

The LCR already has most of the mods you'd add to a vRS. By the time you've spent all the money on the bits for the vRS, you might as well have just brought an LCR.

But their prices are quite different,

again i love the LCR, a great car, franlky the vrs is no comparison, but for the price of buying a stock vrs then modding, you will have a better car than a stock LCR, as the components if nothing else on that car will be tired. The stock LCR is by no means perfect either, but as a base for modding a serious fwd fast road/track day car you cant really go far wrong. I guess it comes down to what type of car you want to drive at the end of the day, the vrs imo is more discreet than the LCR, either way both are very practical and rightly said although the vrs has a bigger boot, the braces in the rear do get in the way of occasion. Still can be taken out easily if required i guess.

It's the practicality of the Leon that puts me off it. I love the front end (although i slightly prefer my FL Vrs front end, but there's not much in it), the rear of the Leon is 10x times nicer than the octy.

I pulled up behind a Scottish Gas marked Leon on Uddingston Main St the other day. The guy had his boot open and it looked absolutely *wedged* full, but in reality all there was a regular sized golf bag (not one of the over sized ones) and a small frame / folded up golf bag trolley, you know the very thin metal travel type ones, as compact as a golf trolley can be. He had a jacket folded up and stuffed in at the front, and a folder resting on top of it all.

You could put all of that in the Octy's boot and call it quarter full, with a straight face too!
