Pads and discs and stuff...

Featured Replies

Hi, just wondered what people reccomend for the Octy as my discs are a bit worn, (dont like driving anything unless i know the brakes are in tip top order)

May as well change the pads at the same time.

Been looking at the Black Diamond stuff, seems to be rather competitively priced, anyone tried these?

Is it actually going to make any difference if i opted for drilled or grooved? not doing any track days or the like but do like to give it some beans now and then

I have BD predator pads on mine and I like them, really nice pad but do have a bit of dust. I use EBC grooved and dimpled disks. DON'T USE as they are really annoying as they tick due to the dimples. They were cheap tho. The initial bite on the BD pred pads is ok then when they are hot/ warmed thru you can feel them working. Personally I'd get some good grooved disks mate, front and rear, the grooves helped the mooing I was getting when reversing hence why I not using std disks.

You could try upgrading your pads and discs, but both the front and rear caliper/disc units on the 4x4 are pony poo, and you'll only get minor improvements by uprating just discs and pads.

If your car is standard spec (e.g. springs, shocks, ARB) then I'd seriously consider upgrading to a vRS front setup.

You should be able to buy a 2nd hand set of vRS calipers and discs for less than a drilled/slotted set of front discs would cost.

The vRS front discs and calipers are direct bolt-on replacement, so no hubs to change or adapters to fit etc.

If your going to start improving your 4x4 a bit more - and these cars really need thicker ARB's and better springs/shocks to release their handling potential - then start looking at uprating the rear single 256mm disc to a Golf GTI/vRS vented 256mm or bigger rear disc and caliper.

In terms of pads, I'd refer you to this thread which is active emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Sorry didn't know you had a. 4x4 lol. I am in my fone while on a break.

Yea ide deff get some vRS carriers and disks. Am I right in saying too that the front callipers are the same? If so only discs and carriers are needed

You do need the caliper.

The OEM VAG caliper design incorporates the carrier/spacer, thus determining the size (diameter) of disc it'll fit.

Even though the calipers look similar, I think the piston in the vRS caliper is bigger ...

The caliper on the 4x4 and the VRS "ARE THE SAME". All you need are a set of VRS carriers and the 312mm disks. Carriers can be had for around £100 but sometimes you can get luck on ebay. I may be selling mine if I can get my Brembos sorted out soon, will be full set of 312mm discs, redstuff pads and calipers/carriers.

All sounds good :)

Especially if the 4x4 has the same caliper as the vrs, save a few quid, all the suspension and arbs are all standard atm.

Presume the discs on the 4x4 are 280mm?

But the carriers and larger discs + pads sounds like a good addon.

the discs are 288mm vented on the 4x4 the rears are solid where the vrs are 256mm vented IIRC
