What size winter tyres on a Fabia VRS?

Featured Replies

Just wondered what size winter tyres people run on their vrs' as looking to purchase mine soon.

Just standard size? :dull:

Just seen a few in europe with 205/55's??

If you go with 205/50 or 205/55 you will get more ground clearance than standard, plus there will be better choice in tyres, (Vreds or Nokians). However you will obviously need to by 4 tyres at once. If you went with the same OEM size you can get away with only buying 2.

Knowing how bad my car was in the snow last winter, I need to find a pair of wheels so I can fit winter tyres on them.

:wonder: all i`d think that does is make your speedo out

Would you just put snow tyres on the front 2 and leave the rears std?? Would this work in heavy snow like last year?

best to have the grippiest tires on the rear of the car i always though

wouldn't want the back end braking out on me

Yes, that's the new theory of new tyre placement.

However on snow/ice/slush you will not move at all as the fronts will spin all the time.

Front tyres take all the power (FWD), steering and most of the braking so that's why I put new tyres on the front.

185 60 15 Continental wintercontacts on Audi rims - brilliant

Don't just fit a pair either front or rear!

I always thought skinnier tyres were better in snowy/icy

conditions than wider ones.

My kangoo works van was much easier to drive in the last bout of

snow/ice than my vRS was. I just kept the car out of the way during

the winter and used the van... This year I'll have to brave the arctc conditions in the

car.... Better spash a few quid on some decent tyres soon... Autumn is almost upon us.

This is what I'm thinking with 15'' audi pepperpots

Which 185 60 15 tyre is best, i can see 88T, 84T etc etc?

If i wanted to stick my 16" alloys back on with winter tyres on all round, am i to stick with the 205/45 R16 rule or can i go with other sizes??

When i do a search on BlackCircles for 205/45's, it only gives me the choice of 1 tyre, so i'd like to be able to change the size and get more options if it's possible.

Any help would be appreciated.

Certainly a wise idea looking into winter tyres - this winter is highly likely to be brutal and up there with the coldest! I'm a moderator over on the Netweather.tv forums, I'm in the know ;)

I was thinking 195's? perhaps 50 r 16 size, be cheaper than 205 rubber.

Last winter I ordered Hankook Evo Icepts in the standard 205/45/16 size. I get them swapped on to the standard alloys in around late October.

I haven't had to use them in full on winter conditions as last wintyer was very mild down south, but they seem excellent tyres in the usual wet and cold UK months.

There is very little choice for winter tyres at UK suppliers, and they're overpriced - you pretty much have to head to European sites. Mytyres.com is what I used, they are based in Germany and ship to the UK with no issues. There's also a French supplier Oponeo which had a good range and prices.

I bought a pair of these last winter: http://www.camskill...._45_R16_83H_TL_

Even if there was very little snow, I had no complaints in the cold and wet. No complaints with Camskill either.

BTW, you do know this is a 2 year old thread!

MyTyres gives a far better selection http://www.mytyres.c...0&sort_by=brand The price given includes P&P, Camskill and others don't.

Just me that doesn't bother with winter tyres for the 2 days of snow we get?

Nope, I don't either. Drove my Leon around in Winter 2010 (you know, the bad one) with a set of FK452 summer tyres that were right on the wear blocks. As long as you're sensible and drive to the conditions, I don't see a problem with it although I'm sure there are several people on here who think I should probably be shot in front of a firing squad at dawn.

As for where to put the tyres, to my mind the rule still applies. You don't want more grip on the front than the rear, it's a recipe for oversteer which is much harder to correct in a FWD car than understeer. So either buy 4 winter tyres, or don't buy any. 2 just on the rear will be fairly useless, and 2 just on the front could see your rear end all over the place with you having no control other than attempting to drag it back into line by using the grip at the front.

All the info about tyre sizes and rolling radius for the Fabia on my post here.....

http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/217351-oem-tyre-sizes-and-alternatives/

As for "should I get any"......

......non-studded "winter" tyres which have a snowflake symbol on the side contain more silica in the compound which allows the tyre to be more flexiable than a standard tyre at temperatures below +7c..........they also have a tread cut into them which is more suited for ice, snow etc.

If you live in areas or drive to areas which suffer from bad weather, or poor gritting, .........or you rely on your car for mobility then DEFO get a set.

I've never had a set before but after the last few years of living in Surrey and the snow they get here with poor gritted roads, it basically makes my car a show piece because i'm unable to drive anywhere, especially living at the top of a steep hill. 1 year i ended up leaving the car near the bottom because i couldn't get up and just ended up sliding around, so i thought as i've got a set of 16" wheels in the garage, i would get some winters stuck on them and see if they fair better than the summers currently on them.

Standard 205/45 16 size for me. Never took them off from last winter.

I'm going for 195/45 on a set of 16" steels for winter :) They seem cheaper than the 205 size and being narrower should help

I did have a look on MyTyres but an advantage of BlackCircles is pay monthly. :) Helps spread the cost of £400+ worth of tyres in 1 go. :D

Winter tyres, as the name suggests are not only used in Snow, but in Winter. Summer tyres loose performance and go hard when temperatures go below 7°C. Winter tyres remain soft at these low temperatures, therefore you gain better grip and braking performance.
