Boot size

Featured Replies

Boot sizes can be very misleading. Often there is little in it with estates and hatches, I found when I was last shopping for cars that most hatches have a bigger boot than the estate. This is due to the floor plan being raised in the estate to give the level load through to the back seats and also the limitation with the retractable cover. If you don't need to travel with the boot cover though then estates can be bigger, but in practical terms the hatch is generally bigger than the estate.

I think the octavia hatch is something along the lines of 560 litres

  • What a thread revival! I think that you are being unfair to the Octavia - the Mondeo is in a class of car at least one size larger - the direct Ford rival for the Octavia is the Focus. The Mondeo is

There is also the Citroen C5 estate, any views or am I swearing again?

Citroen C5 boot 505 / 1462 litres so not so good - I looked at one, nice style but it compromises boot space. Same with Renault Laguna Tourer, poor space.

Volvo V70 575 / 1600

Mazda 6 519 / 1751

However, like the Mondeo, these are all physically much larger externally

Cheers.

Don' know if it helps, but I've had a Mondeo hatch 2.0TDCi (major engine issues) and an Audi A6 Avant 2.4 Multitronic (major gearbox issues) before my Octy Estate.

As people have said, boot sizes can be very misleading. We camp as a family and have been amazed (and amused) by the fact that the Octy boot fits all the stuff in that went into the other cars!

I'd honestly say that it is such a tiny difference in reality between them. Mainly width across the very back (behind wheel arches). This makes the Octy my favourite as it is smaller to park (and squeeze down country lanes) than either of the others without compromising on load lugging.

Mondeo suspension was a bit soft for me (not really soft - more body roll issues), the Audi was hard on the sports suspension and the Octy is a bit bouncy at present. Hoping it will bed in...

The missus (all 5 foot of her) finds it the easiest to drive of the three if that has any bearing.

Also, the smaller size = better fuel economy and lower road tax for the same performance!

Steve

I can get one of those pub fruit machines in the back of my estate and close the lid

When I was looking for a car last year I needed to go to cars of Mondeo/C5 size before I could find ones with enough boot width and length to put a bike into the back. On the current Octy hatchback I can put a 100 mm travel full suspension bike into the car and close the boot without even taking wheels off once I put the seats down...

I am curious as to what the thread starter is planning on carrying that the boot size is so important.

a couple of buggy's and associated child stuff, maybe a suitcase now and again.

LMAO - are they not much cop? I thought Ford had got their act together and were producing god cars?

 I was only joking.

I think they are good cars, but so, so, boring. Too big for my tastes as well. Have you actually stood next to one? It's about the same size as the Ark Royal ;)

here r some numbers for u. go crunch away.......

(make - seats up / seats down)

octavia hatch - 560 / 1420

octavia wagon - 580 / 1620

figures above are luggage capacity in litres (ISO)

I'm not doubting the accuracy of these figures, but I don't understand how the wagon benefits with an extra 200l with the seats down but only 20l with them up?

They don't take into account the space above the shelf on the estate, so it's almost exactly the same as the hatch. Obviously in reality you can use that extra space but the numbers don't reflect it.

Presumably when the seats are down they are allowed to include the entirety of the space.

Is that all? :S

In my Octavia I've had the buggy, kids bike, 3 huge holdalls, guitar in its case, all the other associated holiday crap like coats, shoes, towels, bedding etc., with room to spare, and that's the hatch, never mind the estate. Why do you really need a bigger boot than an Octavia? :wonder:

Aha! Thanks

Confused too.

16 month-old with buggy, travel cot, 3 suitcases, whole load of toys, etc. for her, food and odds and sods, all packed neatly into my vRS hatch boot for a trip to Devon with room to spare......

3 mountain bikes and 3 people and their gear with the parcel shelf in and 2/3 of the seat down... And the mark 1 Octy could do the same... :)

have you seen the size of a Jane Buggy folded? it's takes half the boot space! doesn't leave much room for anything else.

Edited by PumpeDuse

Those Jane buggies are massive! SWMBO used to get it in the boot of her vRS hatch with no worries though.

We've switched to a BabyJogger thing now, much smaller when folded. Bit of luck really seeing as her Yeti is on it's way from the factory :giggle:

I've had three Octavias over the last 7 years purely for the large boot. People are always shocked at how much stuff can be shoehorned into the boot of 'the Tardis' as everyone call it.

The shape of the boot is just as important, no point having a massive boot that is an awkward shape.

Yes it is, but the rear passengers suffer.

Anyway I have been overlooking the obvious, what do I have in my loft, a pair of Skoda roofbars. So when I need the extra space to go on holiday, camping etc I could purchase a roofbox. Seems a better idea, as there is nothing out there within this class of car with a bigger boot.

I fully agree, 90% of the time it is too big at the expense of the rear leg room - hence why I changed mine for a Superb (still a huge boot but with acres of legroom in the rear)

Yes it is, but the rear passengers suffer.

I dont agree at all......comparable cars with similar sized chassis, ie golf, focus, astra, bora, civic, megane, a4, passat etc dont have considerably more rear passenger space and nothing like as good a boot as the octy

Everyone keeps comparing it to bigger cars like the mondeo/superb etc, its a golf with a bigger boot!

There is also the Citroen C5 estate, any views or am I swearing again?

I had a quick look at the C5 but rejected it because it doesn't seem to be very roomy for passengers. Resale value also worse than Skoda.

Actually, even that's unfair as far as space goes, the Octy has more rear legroom than the Golf!

I don't get the complaint either, unless you're putting people that are well over 6ft in the back I suppose.
