Water in the foot well!

Featured Replies

Hi all, I recently just installed my sub. I took robs route and went under the scuttle panel. When I put the panel back on it didnt quite lay flat at the joint in the middle. I have just come back off on holiday and when my mum came and picked me up in the vRS it smelt a bit like mould. I touched the foot well and it felt a little wet, so today I went out to check it after the terenchal down pour last night. The mat was abosuletly soaked, I lifted the carpet and there where only two mid sized wet spots at the top and the bottom of where the carpet laid, I then pulled away the carpet and felt underneath it and there where a few pools of water. I felt under the car aswel and managed to find a sizeable hole, but it was a perfect circle and felt more like it was meant to be there. Back inside the foot well I felt over the electrics and they felt quite dry and there was no water in the glove box either. I've took some pictures to help as well. I feel it is todo with where I wired the sub in because it has never happened before and the fact the floor mat was soaked as well, since it has a plasic bottom I can't see the water coming up from underneath and drenching the mat but not the carpet. I tried all the electrics and they all worked.

Any ideas?

Painted in lighter blue and darker blue to show the levels of water.

No calcium marks left on the plastic so it hasn't come through the window or roof, glove box was dry as well.

Can see it is slightly wet near the airbox, otherside is dry, so is the engine bay.

Accidentally popped this bit out and it will not fit back in.

This is where I think the water is getting in.

Just went and looked now and there appears to be a puddle of water formed where the foot well is on the floor.

I suspect thar water is being routed in via the grommet next to the pollen filter under the scuttle panel. Is that were you have routed your amp power cable?

I ran a cable through there for my laser detected and flooded my car!

Check to see if the bottom rears of your front wheel arch plastic liners are blocked up with leaves and compost....

The water is probably worse in the rear passenger footwell, due to the slope of the floor.

Thats exactly where I went in! It is only that front left foot well that is soaked though. I made sure to clean that out when I had the chance. What did you use to combat it? I am thinking silcone seal.

As you can see there is a puddle of water under the car. Red circle indicates where it has come from.

This round bit (to the left) had water dripping off it, looks a little damp behind it.

A floor beam I am gussing, only wet in this part, located where the red circle is.

DSC03852.jpg

This is another wet spot directly under the foot well. You can see the hole I mentioned in the background.

DSC03846.jpg

This is the hole I mentioned I could feel.

The hole in the last pic is meant to have a rubber bung in it, one of mine fell out on the drive and a I bought a new one so might have the part number somewhere. As mbames pointed out the water in the footwell is probably coming through the grommet next to the pollen filter, or through the pollen filter mounting if you disturbed it at all.

Cheers!

I reckon that is where it is coming from as well. What do I want to do about it?

have a look at my posts about water leaks, the scutle cover itself doestn look like enough to cause a leak, after all there is a scuttle tray underneath with drains, check drains arent blocked (causing water to rise in scuttle area) as said its prob due to you using a grommit lower down in the cabin, and volume of rain has backed up and leaked through.

Firstly you need to identify leak, so use a hose and soak the car to see if you can recreate the leak.

Then....this is the fun bit, fix the leak or as i found leaks, then take out all your interior to get the carpet and underlay out to dry it.

If you dont water will sit in the floorpan and rot cause problems down the line as well as cause a smelly car.

Take opportunity to replace silly white skoda carpet for anthracite one from dealer for about £120ish

check to see the water sitting on your subframe thats about to drip in the picture isnt coming of the bulkhead from the aircon drain.

Do you have a picture of the anthracite carpets in a mk1?

I couldn't seem to find the post you where on about.

At the moment I have a towel under the carpet trying to absorb up all the water that has run in. Luckily it has gone dry here atm.

thats weird, i cant find them either!?!?!?!

they were on the old briskoda site, maybe they got wiped.

I really cant be bothered to retype everthing i did, if you want pm me your number and am happy to give you a buzz to help.

towel and dryer wont do it properly unless you dry it for weeks and weeks an can ensure airflow to aid drying. Really you need to get it out to dry it and the ensure there is no moisture anywhere like in the loom or hidden in side the metal floor pan recesses.

Best pic i can find, its a well worthwhile mod and its easy to esp if you have to take stuff out anyway.

And then later I removed it as a thieving w**ker stole the my snooper from inside the car, and destroyed half of my hands free kit.

i have to say, i have never and would never use a flat mounted bung rather than one on the firewall when fitting ice etc for this reason

Cheers all for the advice.

I went outside and shot some water into the area of the scuttle pan where it sits and surely enough, water came running down. So I took a trip to Wicks and bought some outside roof water sealent for extra protection. I used the grommit at the back behind the air box, So I pulled that out and pushed the grommit in, wasn't even sat in there properly, blooming Ross and his "nimble fingers" ! So now that should all be welded up tight.

Sweedish...

Do you think you beable to get anymore pics? Maybe with the seats showing as well, like through the door way?

mbjames...

Cheers for the pics!

I hate it when people do that, you stole my stuff, not much you can do about that, but why did you have the damage the car in the process. Same happened to my dad, they puylled out half of his dash trying to get cables for the gear he nicked!

As for your handsfree.. is that an option for Skoda? Because I have that exact same unit in my car, the tape is even in the same place.

Nokia kit, self fitted.

broke the glass & bent the door :-( Everything they nicked they left half the cables for, so a wasted effort. Mega fail.

yup those grommits being messed with can cause all sorts of grief!

i will get some pics for you over the weekend off my desktop no probs.

Annoyance!, went out today to replace the towel and there was a small puddle of water on the polysterene tray under the glove box. When I pulled back the carpet there was a nice droplet line towards the center console. Is there any more gromits under the scuttle pannel I could of potentially knocked?

Is your pollen filtered fitted correctly? Not sure what grommets there are to the "drivers side" of the pollen filter.

I can't see the pollen filter causing a problem? But it should be on properly. I spoke to my dad and he thinks it might just be some residual water left at the top of the car?

I have never experienced the pollen filter causing leaks, but other members have suggested it being an issue in other threads.

It could well be some water left behind..... have you tried rocking the car and see if anything more dribbles down? Maybe time to get the house out again.

Its a very common problem the pollen filter leaking on vag cars, its the seating that if not flush with the casing will allow water ingress. To be sure, undo 2 bolts iirc either side, remove, clean up seal and mounting face of filter housing, then to be sure run silicone bead around housing and replace doing up bolts again.

If water comes in towards the middle of the car, it could be the aircon drain plug, from the condensor/aircon airbox that no longer makes a good seal with the aircon drain.

This is the almightiest fecker to fix.......check this too firstly, its to the left of the centre console (remove glove box for better viewing access and kind of pull back top of carpet to see where the drain pipe meets (or doesnt meet and form a good seal) around the drain pipe where it goes through the bulkhead.

Well I pulled off the pollen filters head/holder to reveal a large puddle of water had formed at the bottom of it. So I mopped it all up and put the sealent I used around the gasket and screwed back in place. Last night when I was in the car I left the aircon on, so whilst I was testing to see if removing the old incar hands free set effected my stereo, with the car turning over, the fans kicked in and lots of water shot out of it (risudal water left in the foam pad I guess) I left it running for 5 minutes on 19* and no more water came out, so I hope that is now fixed. Also the scuttle wasn't sitting quite flush so I realigned that. Fingers crossed it is all fixed now!
