Insurance.....AAAARRRGHHHH!

Featured Replies

Not a happy bunny! :@

I had an accident back in March that wrote-off my previous car but the other guy's insurance company has finally admitted full liability. However, when I got my vRS back in April, all the insurance quotes I got said that they'd have to assume that I was fully liable for the accident until the case was settled.....at which point I would get a reduction on my policy. Well, at the time of getting the insurance, More Than were the cheapest (surprising I know!), but I was still having to pay over £650. It's bad, thinks me, but at least it will come right down once the insurance claim is settled. Well I had official confirmation that they other party was 100% liable for the accident so I phoned up More Than to let them know. After battling through a number of operators in a far off country that is well renowned for curried food, I was informed that my refund would be.......£5.91!!!!! WHAT??!?? £5.91?!?!? You are having a laff, right?!? So are they saying that if I'd had an accident that was entirely my fault, my premium would have increased by £5.91!??! I think not!!!

So, VERY not happy about that and have been looking round online for alternatives.....and it's REALLY not good! I don't know if premiums in general have gone up recently but they seem hugely high. Just had a quote of £960 from Adrian Flux!!!!! Confused.com had a best price of £540 with an excess of £500. What is going on...?!?

Sadly, the remap I was very much hoping to get looks like it's a non-starter now, as I dread to think what my premium would go up to with that added on :(

So if anyone knows of any really good insurance companies that aren't quite as ludicrously money grabbing as the majority seem to be today, then I'd love to hear about them!

Hi,

The insurance groups have competly been reworked over the last couple of months. Now, instead of 1-20 it is 1-50. Most reviews are saying that renewal prices are, on average, increasing by 20% on the previous year. It's shocking quite honestly!

Yes admiral, elephant etc will be your cheapest option as a new costumer at the moment, just be cautious of claiming!

Have you tried the Skoda UK site? There is an option on there for Skoda UK insurance. Just look under OWNERS on the options bar on the top of the page. This will offer up a range of options on the left hand side. Insurance is listed.

Good luck.

Shop around is all I can say, Comparethemarket etc.

My son was being quoted £2200 for his 2nd year of driving a £150 Felly; we managed to get it down to £1650 by shopping around

I cut my insurance by almost a third by adding the wife to insurance, she has a licence but doesnt drive. LOL

I wouldn't go near LV (Liverpool Victoria). I was with them through my being in the CSMA (Civil Service Motoring Assoc.) until I hit two huge potholes and did £1000 worth of damage to the car. I told LV what had happened, out of courtesy, and said I wouldn't claim on my policy but would recover the repair costs myself from the council. The council's insurers eventually stumped up and covered all the repair costs, saving me a £150 excess but more importantly LV £850 for the balance of the repairs.

Their thanks for saving them nearly a grand was to shove my premium up by a ridiculous amount come renewal date. T*$$**s!

I'm now with Tesco - no complaints so far.

I tried to get better quotes too currently had to stay with More Than as they offered the cheapest..looked on the compare sites and was being quoted silly prices compared to last year, some as much as £2000/3000.Even A plan and Adrian flux gave silly offeres..Were paying for all the uninsured and crash for cash scams, typical robbing insurance companies ohh let's just add 20% increase or whatever it is on every good driver or the ones that bother to have insurance..I am too paying £690 with More Than i think it should be less, but it's better than some of the stupid quotes i have had, glad i don't have my Subaru anymore :'(

Thanks for the input everyone. I just spoke to (yet another!) insurance agent and he said that motor premiums had all shot up recently. And the main reasons?

1) Uninsured drivers

2) A massive number of personal injury claims

I can feel a rant coming on.....especially about the second one!!!! Really annoys me when people who are perfectly fit and healthy put in a personal injury claim after a minor scrape when there's absolutely nothing wrong with them. Yes you might get a few quid for lying through your teeth, but here we are reaping the reward for your lying, greedy, money grabbing behaviour with massive insurance premiums!!!! Grrrrrrrrrr.....!!!!!! :@:wall:

OK....deeeeeep breaths!! ;)

So bang goes my remap....just for a laugh I tried getting a quote for a mapped car and the cheapest was over £1000. I despair.

And the weather's crap too :rain::rain:

I've got my renewal due in about three weeks and while I haven't had the quote from my existing insurer yet, the best I've found so far has been just £8 more than last year which isn't bad.

There are some decent deals to be had still , you just need to shop around more.

The best quote I've had so far is from Skoda UK, which suprised me somewhat.

For me (39), and my wife (40), New Scout in KT17 was 360 inc accident recovery, courtesy car & legal cover.

My daughter's renewal was £1500+ as she had an 'at fault' accident several months ago. After visiting comparison sites, I decided to put my wife on her policy and see what happens......down to £800! Apparently, having my wife on her policy brought it right down due to the fact that my wife hasn't had an accident within the last 3 years!

I ordered my VRS FSI last Monday and went online out of curiosity......the cheapest quote for me was £311 with a protected bonus in the N14 area of north London.

Go on several comparison websites as they vary a lot and then call them to see if they can go down even further and if you have a spouse/brother or sister who haven't got their own insurance policy it might just help you out.

Good luck!

I had my renewal from more than £440 so I went on gocompare. The cheapest quote I got was £280 with more than. These companies are a rip off!!!!!I had exactly the same with the wifes car with Shelias wheels.

lol that's what i did,except i think it was money supermarket.. :)

I can understand why new drivers take the risk and don't buy insurance,my mates son was quoted £3000 to insure a 1.2 saxo so he could drive to college etc,new driver,he told them to feck off,it' just a big rip off,3 grand for a 1200cc citroen saxo,it's hardly high performance..

i have just moved from Linolnshire over to the NW inbetween Manchester and Liverpool, when i rang my insurance company (Esure) to change my address, my premium had risen over £600. I was involved in an R accident this time last year for which i was not to blame (rear ended) and i didnt claim for any injuries, despite still to this day receiving phone calls from claims companys telling me that my insurance company has upto £1500 put a side for me if i was to claim. Really winds me up.

So went on the old comparison web sites and brought it down to just over £500, (still smarting tho), then I phoned Chris Knott insurance and they have brought it down to £440, and the guy on the phone explained that it wouldnt raise my premium if my car was chipped.

Living in Manchester is not good for insurance - I'm just north of Manchester and was quoted £950 back in April to renew my insurance on my 59 plate vRS (and it's not like I'm super high risk - I'm 33, with 9 years no claims) :o . Managed to get it down to £700 (£200 excess) after serious shopping around - I ended up using Chris Knott as they matched the best quote and threw in free no claims protection. The irony was that I ended being insured with Highway, which is part of Liverpool Victoria who gave me the original £950 quote!

I set up a thread back in March asking what other people were paying - some were only paying £200 for their vRS insurance :'(

If it goes up by 20% next year then I will not be a happy bunny

Last year mine was around £500 for a vRS and this year the renewal was £526 from Hasting Direct. I got a cheaper quote from iamsurety though, presumably on the basis of new business but what next year's will be, I've no idea. You need to be a member of the IAM I think to get a good deal - www.iam.org.uk

First Direct at present will beat your renewal by 10%.

Also if you add your partner you will get a considerable discount.

I insure with directline and fully comp with protected NCD courtesy care they come in at £280/yr. even with a fault claim 4 yrs ago - worth a try with them.

Just moved mrs policy to first direct as they did beat renewal by 10% without any problems

My Mrs hasn't got that bit of paper that says you can drive down the road like a loon...not that she or I would.

Its well worth getting the IAM test under your belt.

I have changed cars (remapped Fabis vrs to petrol octy vrs) and insurance decreased by £80. Red Alliance is the insurer (IAM drive and ride policy) through Adrian Flux.

Dont bother with remap as its about £100 more per year and tbh how often will you use it? My car is perfectly fast for my limted ability and its my daddy car for the new little one. If you have to ask - can I afford it then dont bother as its not just insurance but also warranties become tainted and you have increased wear on drive train etc. Equally it may reduced mpg when cruising, but when giving it some it will make it worse...

my 2p

It's a lot worse than people claiming injury as it appears there's a lot of money being paid out for non-existent passengers. On a motoring forum I'm on a guy was looking for advice, he'd come around a corner in winter time to see a car stopped ahead of him because the one ahead of that had spun round sideways on the road due to ice. The user had slammed on his brakes too late bumped into the car in front which in turn had bumped into the one in front of that. As the collisions were low speed, the damage was minor so the person had wanted to settle without going through insurance but the other drivers didn't want to. The insurance claim then came at over £60,000 between the two drivers because each of them had a car filled with passengers (despite being on their own) who all suffered whiplash injuries and the cars had suffered serious damage needing a lot of work(!) That's bad on its own but what was particularly worrying was that over the month, two more people posted very similar stories to the degree we thought they must be duplicate posts however it turned out they were different people as some of the details were different. To come across that just in passing is really quite scary and makes me wonder how rampant this type of abuse is, I think it's reasonable to suspect those were setups and I've seen on the BBC scams were if you're not bothered about driving any more and looking to sell a cheap car you hand it over and they 'crash' the car into another and juice the insurance for all it's worth and give you more money than the car would have been worth.

My insurance for my Toledo with the 150bhp 1.9 PD TDI engine was around £240, when I phoned up to change to the Octavia I had to pay an extra £100 which I thought would be largely down to the admin fee for changing however looking at my renewal this year of £315 it looks like it's mainly due to premium increases. To be fair though I should consider myself lucky as it's clearly a lot less than others are having to stomach right now.

John

tesco are pretty reasonable and only cost me an extra 50 quid with remap

Sky insurance give upto 20% off for being briskoda member. I have 6 points and sky quoted me £650 with £250 excess. Avg was £1300 dearest was £2000. Ryan.

There seems to be no benefit in being loyal to an insurance company. They all quote a cheap premium to get your business and then try to stiff you on subsequent years.

Check around at every renewal, then join Quidco.com and see who is doing the best cash back. Then you can work out who is offering the best value.

I got £65 cash back through quidco at my last renewal.

First Direct at present will beat your renewal by 10%.

That's a joke as my renewals always go up by at least 50% over what I was paying. What they need to do is beat any quote by 10%, not the renewal quote that's always hugely inflated.

As others have said, there's no reward for loyalty - once they have you as a customer they try to sting you in subsequent years as presumably some are just too lazy to shop around every year. They're all just money grabbing bar stewards
