Horrid noise from Rear of VRS

Featured Replies

Hi - drove all of a few yards up the street this morning and the car started to make a horrendous noise ( kind of a mix of grating and Croaky sound, a bit clanky too - sorry hard to describe). Thought initially it sounded like something was falling off. :|

Neighbour also heard it and we both had a good look under the car, but nothing evidently loose. He thought it might be a wheel Bearing ( but car is only a few months old?).

Difficult to isolate noise to one particular side, so have taken both back wheels off to check for any stones in Brakes etc.. No noise apparent on rotating the wheels.

Took out for a short test just and noise not evident, but TPM has come on ( might be that swopped rear wheels around - which might have confused things).

Not alot to go on I know, but if anyone has any thoughts or similar experiences would be good to know. May try and get it to the dealers tomorrow, but reluctant to drive it too far incase I do any damage.

Thanks

Sarah

Hi Lummox - Am in Worcester.

Give Startin a call first thing Tuesday and i'm sure we could have a look for you to make sure its all safe. Even we get bank holidays off.

If your worried about driving it then call Skoda assist I guess.

Probably some gravel stuck between back plate and rear disk?

A friend of mine who is not a member on here got his vrs a few months ago. He had a similar noise coming from the rear of the car. After several check ups at the local dealer, the problem was eventually sorted by a independent garage (Volkscraft in Exeter).

The issue was that the whole of the rear suspension was loose, especially on the nearside. Matt at Volkscraft found several loose parts that were causing the creaking. The rear nearside wheel was also well out of alignment. Was easy to fix and didn't cost my mate too much, however, after contacting Skoda Uk and threatening legal action, they have agreed to pay for all the work.

Worth bearing in mind.

sorry to hijack thread :)

Lummox - how long have you been in worcester at Startin? Thats my local!

I agree that it could just be the brake shield behind the disc on the rear. Mind had some gravel in it and it made a hell of a noise.

However, I guess you should get it checked out.

Thanks for all your thoughts on this.

Took car out this afternoon again, for a short drive - noise seems to have gone, so am keeping fingers crossed that it was just a stone caught, although did sound quite different from past occassion I had this happen with a previous octy.

Thanks Nobafett - will defo bear this in mind and maybe get it checked out if I hear any other noises.

Cheers

Sarah

It will have been a stone. I've had it a couple of times. Sounds horrendous and quite worrying till you realise what it is.

Hi Nick - thanks - yeah it was pretty alarming.

Had a rear wheel sheer off and overtake me years ago on an old Rover SD1 ( someone had mixed alloy and steel on wheel fixings). Hit the road with hell of a bang and made a huge gouge in the tarmac. Has left me a bit paranoid now everytime I hear a wierd noise from the rear of a car!

Check that you put your wheels back on the right sides otherwise your tyre tread pattern will be rotating in the wrong direction.

I had that on a TVR 25 years ago or so! Large nut that held the rear hub on came undone - car had only just been to a dealer for a load of suspension work, had it towed back there and they fixed it free of charge, were a bit sheepish as I reckon they knew it was their fault for not using a new locking nut. Took me two hours to find the wheel.
