Audi Ouch!

Featured Replies

I called to see a mate last night who was so proud of his new Audi Q5. He took massive p**s out of me when I told him I had ordered a Superb Elegance 4x4 Estate. I sat in his pride and joy and realised that I had made the right choice....and saved myself 10 grand!

I will be the first to admit though, the A5 looks spot on. However worth +£10k over the Superb? I doubt it!

ahh, but for that extra 10 grand you get the pleasure of looking at that prestige badge and also you get a more fancy key fob!!!

Let them revel in their materialistic glory. It will surely wear thin soon enough when it comes to servicing and the same niggles as all the VAG cars are prone to having....

The Superb will always be the "hidden gem"

P.s. I bet you can pick up a brand new Audi A5 somewhere in the UK for immediate delivery,, . Try that with a Superb estate!!!

You may be able to pick up an A5 somewhere but the OP was talking about a Q5.

These are as rare, if not more so than the Superb Estate. I have two friend who enquired about new and secondhand ones.

They were quoted approx seven to eight months wait for a new one and told that currently second hand ones go for more than new ones.

She enquired in July and was quoted next March as the earliest possible delivery date "IF she was lucky"

Not even the superb estate takes that long. :wonder:

Not really in the same class though are they.

When I ordered my Superb Estate Elegance, I compared it with the Audi A6 Avant. Lots of common parts including the engine of course. However, when I specced up the Audi to the same level as the Superb, it was over £10k more expensive. An easy decision for me then!

Oops, My apologies, The OP did indeed mention the Q5.

Last year while on holiday in the south of France we requested a large saloon as a hire car able to carry 4 adults and our luggage to our rented villa in the area behind Grasse. Previously we got a new style C220 merc saloon and it was too cramped so we asked for an E class this time.

The hire company at the airport offered us a Q5 which we accepted with glee. We got all the cases in (only just) and made our way to our gaff.

The Q5 was well specced and had the 2.0 Cr diesel engine coupled to an auto box.

With 4 adults etc the car was grossly underpowered and this became worse when we got to the hilly part with steep swithbacks. The throttle spent most of its time on the floor!!!

Overall during that week the Q5 only averaged 31mpg which included some lengthy and leisurly runs.

I think that if it had the 3.0 v6 diesel engine it would be a great car and when I got home I priced up the same model as we hired and almost had a fit when I saw the price.

It definitly is not worth that much!!!

I did the same - company car order but the Skoda 170 estate elegance that I have ordered is around £50 per month less in tax than a similar spec A6 (A6 Avant 170 Sline - altough the Skoda still outspecs the Audi) - ie around £2100 less over the lease period (or around 20k miles worth of fuel........). Plus the Audi has been around for at least 5 years in current form.

I have just dropped the Life-time Shine on my Superb 4x4 Elegance Estate order and added the upgraded Sound System.

I hope the extra dosh is worth it for the ICE. emoticon-0144-nod.gif

Erm, there is actaully very little in common with the new A6 and new Superb. Engines may be the same output but they are different engine codes and mounted totally different. The A6 uses a fibre optic infotaintment "ring", different chassis, different gearbox, different suspension, different canbus system, different 4wd system etc etc

I think I would have seriously looked at the Superb if I could have got it with the same engine as in my A4 and the same 4x4 system. Still, it’s a great value for money car (the Superb). emoticon-0148-yes.gif

OK, I take your point, but lets not be too picky about this. Essentially the engines are the same, but tweked to suit the different VAG companies. There are many components 'under the skin' of all the VAG vehicles that are the same.

However, you are missing the point. Taking all into consideration, I don't believe that the Audi is worth £10k more for a similar spec, and even a specced up Passat is more expensive than the Superb!

Well, when I bought my V6 Estate, I'd got a Merc 350 E Class Estate priced up as well. Taking into consideration the difference in what Mercedes offered me for my previous car then It would have cost me an extra £24K for the E Class rather than the V6 Superb Estate I've now got! Now, there ain't £24K difference in the vehicles!

Was it Autocar that came to the same conclusion with a dual test of the 2 cars?
