My cars been making some very whiney noises until warm, I suspected a gasket, but thought I'd better check the turbo anyway, bad news.... :o :'(

took the core out and my god, less than 12 months old this, damn my lead foot :(

So looks like I have to get a new core today, fortunately theres no damage to the turbo anywhere else so should be pretty straight forward.

I can't offer any techy radvice mate but maybe a bigger/hybrid turbo

may be in order at this point?

Overboost I think, at its not damaged anything else on the turbo?!

nope...nothing...I really cant understand it, its going to ITS for repair so hopefully they'll be able to shed some light on it, but my friend really knows his stuff and he thinks it must be overboost - not unexpected really, heard they do it a lot.

£295.00 for a new core, good price, doesnt mean it didnt sting :(

Unless something got into the pipework and damaged the blades, the centre bearing is goosed causing excessive shaft run out. Those blades look as if they have been fouling the casing.

housing was untouched...wish id took photos of it now lol.

So can u just buy the damaged wheel and shot it straight on.....is there any kind of balancing needed or is it plug and pray.

That sort of damage to the leading edge of the compressor wheel blade is usually caused by a foreign object entering the turbo inlet.

Overboost/overspeed damage usually occures to the contoured radius of the blade and wheel tip, and more often than not results in the blade or blades being completely snapped off the compressor wheel.

IMO the bearings will most likely be damaged to some degree, due to the turbo being operated with the damaged compressor wheel in an unbalanced condition.

Is that a garrett turbo? Is that not the original one then?

I suspect foreign object issues too! Can't see how else that type of damage has been caused. Seeing as something as innocent as a piece of paper can cause damage to the blades given the speed of rotation, that looks fairly grim :(

looking at the first pic, where you can see the blade, is this exposed all of the time or is there something covering this when in place in the engine? how would something get into the pipe work?

erm that connects to the charge pipe? there is nothing else covering it if thats what your meant.

*no its not the standard turbo.

ive no idea lol im sorry if im not making any sense or sounding stupid but you could have just been really unlucky and debris of some sort could have got into the blade from that open side?

Unless you've had the whole system blown through you can't be totally sure. As mentioned, it needn't be a very large piece of debris/metal to do damage. I just can't see how that type of damage has been caused without interference from something.

How long has the Garrett been fitted?

Possibly something from the previous turbo's death?!

Is that side connected to the air intake? Or is that to the intercooler piping? Ive never had a look at one before?

There are three likely places that the remains of the object that caused this damage could be found:

1st - The inlet side of the intercooler core.

2nd - Embeded in a piston crown.

3rd - The inlet side of the cat.
