My car has just turned up

Everyone has their own thoughts on running engines in, but have to admit i had always been under the impression with diesels it was even more important to be gentle for the first few miles???

I'd go with John's advice myself...

Modern diesels dont really need running in.

Just get in and drive them, just dont use high rpm for the first few hunderd miles

Me too, when I was a tractor driver I was given a brand new tractor once and put it on the most power hungry implement we had, it would basically take all this 120 hp engine would give it, I made sure that the engine gave everything it could, flat out, full power output for the first 10 hours of life, smoke pouring out of the bonnet from the paint burning off the exhaust manifold. It never gave me any trouble after that and never had to have the oil topped up between services.

The important thing is to give the car some welly in order to bed the piston rings in properly so they make a good seal with the cylinder bores, that way you will have good engine power and low oil consumption for the life of the car.
