Octavia Diesel intercooled?

Featured Replies

Someone will know the answer to this........... I was having a nosey around under the bonnet of my new CR170 VRS, can't see any signs of an intercooler, being totally new to diesels, is an intercooler not required / does not work on a TDI....I know that on my petrol VRS's the forge fmic made a very noticeable difference. also does it have an oil cooler, I noticed the Oil temperature readout on Maxidot varies quite consideraby, is there a reason for this?

There is an intercooler, its not visible under the bonnet though. The intercooler is situated behind the front bumper on the drivers side (RHD) right down in the corner behind the foglights.

....as per the mk1 petrol vrs, is there any benefit in a FMIC as per the octy vrs petrol? or is the charge temp not as critical on a diesel?

the space in front of the radiators is screaming out to be filled with a meaty FMIC

I thought that the PD140 had it in the radiator sandwich at the front.

Mine does, Skud you can try removing the engine cover ( it is only held on by small posts and pulls off quite easily ) and then following the pipework from the inlet manifold around to the front of the car to find the intercooler. Intercoolers will work on any turbocharged car whether it is petrol or diesel, the harder the turbo is made to work, the more the benefit an intercooler will give.

I'm not surprised that the oil temperature varies a lot as not only is it used for lubrication it is used for cooling too, many engines nowadays have nozzles to spray oil onto the underside of the pistons to cool them, the harder you push the engine, the hotter the pistons will get and the hotter the oil gets. There is an oil cooler but it is an oil to water cooler, you will see it low down at the front of the engine, a square type metal box with rubber pipes leading from it, under the oil filter housing just behing the radiator fans and above the intake air pipe which runs across the bottom of the engine bay to/from the intercooler.

170 pd intercooler is front mounted behind condenser

Same as for the 140 TDI then, makes sense, common parts like intercooler and pipework etc.

+1. My PD140 has a IC stuffed between the A/C condenser and the rad. It was replaced when my turbo exploded :dull:
