The Bittorrent effect...

Featured Replies

Ive been pointed at a very interesting read about the rise of bittorrent.. HERE

It certainly makes an interesting read and a interview with the creator :)

Clever bloke, i've read that interview elsewhere.

I've only just got the software - so how does it really work as I seem to understand it all operates with internet browser, not in a program?

what you need is:

1. find a tracker site e.g the now dead suprnova.org

2. search that site for what you want

3. download the torrent file (usually about 20k) this holds the tracker info

4. open that torrent file with your torrent software

5. download (hopefully the tracker will not require you to go and register at another site. Or has been not been shut down)

6. after downloading keep the software open for as long as it took you to fully download it (this is called seeding)

This is bittorrent in a nutshell :D

tracker site? hmmm, wonder where these are listed, if anywhere? :D

Cheers mate!

a word to the wise... and a story

I'm new to Bittorrent too (usually use EMule for vids and Soulseek for mp3). Anyway, I'm giving it a run for it's "money".

Half way through getting ALL the Monster Garage series and Series 2 of Family Guy through Bittorrent...

Norton Antivirus perks up and asks for an update. I stupidly click the "yeah ok if you really must" button. Hey presto, it restarts my computer and I lose my download links.

Half an hour later I have refound the links and I'm a couple of years older and wiser :)

Moral:- Ignore Symantec when trying to download important stuff :)

anti-virus? wossat?

edit: currently getting some music at 30kb/s + rising. puts WinMX into perspective!

Hmmm. last night my PC crashed while downloading an album... and now i'm left with a folder on my desktop with various 0kb files in it. :( Is there a way to kick this download off again where I left off, or should I just delete it start again. I know which site it came from, but searching there again today came up with no matches.
