Canon MP640 or MP990 Wifi Inkjet Printer

Featured Replies

Considering taking the plunge and getting a wifi printer

Saw a HP Photosmart Premium today, but checked out cartridge prices and they are horrendous

Can get loads of Canon compatibles on ebay for a fraction of the price, so definitely going for Canon, but undecided between MP640 and MP990

Advantage of MP990 is that is has a negative scanning facility, and I've got loads of old negatives which I could scan BUT it is almost double the price of the MP640

Does anyone have either of them to offer their views please?

You can probalby get cheap 3rd party inks on Ebay for HP too. But you get what you pay for. Cheap inks can be horrible, and any savings will be wiped out by poor quality, poor longetivity of the prints.

Don't have any experience of either printer though

Ink - try this guy out .

http://www.printercartridges.net/

Also known as Rapid resolutions .

Decent quality ,cheap ink and a rapid turn round time .

He also gives a no quibble guarantee .

We used to use him when out residents association did a newsletter , couple of hundred copies of four page once a month - cheapest ink we found , and never a bad cartridge .

This is good advice - I recently bought the HP Deskjet 5560 wifi printer after I saw my freinds results using non original cartridges i would always stay with the original inks - I have heard some horror stories about inks that have been water based drying out in the printer head and wrecking the printer.

The HP warranty is intresting though...it states the use of non HP inks will not effect the warranty in anyway however if its found that damage has occured through the use of non HP inks then you may face labour charges.

Tempting - But I will stick with the originals.

I'm more than aware of the risks involved of using compatibles over originals

The main intention of the thread was to canvass whether anyone on here owns one of the Canons mentioned to give some useful advice on how good they are in general use, eg photos, scanning, copying, wi-fi etc

We got a Canon MP620 wi-fi printer / scanner / copier about 18 months ago now and only have positive things to say about it. The print quality is great and i have to say after having a couple of Canon printers i'm definately a convert from HP.

Regards the cartridges..... Again i tend to stick to original Canon cartridges but you can get them cheaper than in the shops if you look online. Personally i usually get mine from 7dayshop.com... To replace all five of my cartridges the other month it cost me about Β£30-35. Canon also do triple packs of the cyan, magenta and yellow inks which can be bought for around Β£20 at most so lowering the cost etc...

I know Damo on here was asking me about wi-fi printers the other month and i recomended a Canon one then. He got in touch the day after he bought it to say how chuffed he was with it as it was the first Canon he'd ever had.

Cheers

Dave.

Cheers Dave, that's exactly the sort of response I was after

I've found the MP640 on Pixmania for Β£109 & Β£16 delivery - if I use Quidco I might get a bit back on that

The negative Scanner on the MP990 would be nice, but that's about Β£239

That looks like a good price fella..... Looks like the MP640 is the newer version of ours the MP620. If you get it and have any probs or questions give us a shout.

Cheers

+1. Best advice there is, right there.

I have an MX700. And love it. Not the best scanner in the world, but fine for docs.

I am after a new supplier of ink cartridges, because the one I used, MX-2 have gone bust. I'm tempted to try 7-dayshopper as they seam cheap and, like MX-2 are from Gurnsey, so you don't pay VAT.

Annoyingly, the last time I bought them I got a bulk order (5 each), but within a month, the printer head failed, so needed a new printer. If anyone has a Cannon IP4000 and needs cartridges I have lots of spare ones.

To replace it I got a IP4700, I guess because it's under manufactures warranty it would be best to stick with OEM ones for the first year rather than use compatibles.
