Colour anxiety

Featured Replies

Having placed my order last month, I am now in something of a quandry over my colour choice - Black Magic.. There was a pretty good thread about colours a while back...

http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/140459-snow-monster-colours/

Trouble is, everytime I see a pic of a SM in a different colour I get more and more uncertain that I have picked the right one. By turns I decide that Candy White, Aqua Blue, Muscovado or Cappuccino look better but I can't decide!

I should add that my wife is rather more decisive than me and is convinced Black is the right colour.

Should I:

A. Stick with Black, it gives the SM a classy look (esp with those silver roof rails)

B. Change to <insert colour here> because Black is a colour only for hearses / taxis / drug dealers

C. Get a life... and start worrying about something more important (e.g. whether to upgrade the sound system)

Definitely C Black is a good colour and the Yeti will look great, especially when polished up. I chose Cappuccino as I was told it would not show the dirt!!! (True)

A A A mines black and i love it see the picture in members picture thread page 8 give it a wax or 2 then a paint sealer and a few more waxes it will look the dogs b-------

I was going to order black until a few people on here said it looked like a hearse with the tinted windows, so I went for Candy White and glad I have cos it looks fab, but even now some say it looks like white van man so you cant win whatever colour you choose. Just go for the one you really want and sod anybody else's opinion, its your car !!

I've heard a few comments on colour, "black looks like a hearse" , "red looks like a post office van" and from my wife "White looks tacky". So which one did I order - the white of course. In my search for colour I copied many of the images from the owners page on here to see which one I liked the best and in all honesty I don't think there is a bad colour, it comes down to personal choice. Take a look at the black ones on here, I seem to remember one in the snow which looked great along with the one pictured with the roof rack and side steps. I saw a Muscavado one in the showroom it looked really classy strangely enough my wife liked that one. I bet every member on here can give a good argument as to the attributes of their particular colour. I liked the contrast of White against black trim it's all down to personal choice so stick with what you ordered you must have chosen it for the right reasons.

White is the dogs dangly bits, it just suits the car so well, and I dont like white on other cars but think the Yeti is superb in white !

Better be, I ordered one lol

I've yet to see a Yeti in any colour that I didn't think looked really good.

In part ,I took a practical decision with my aqua blue. I feared darker colours would prove harder to keep clean. My former Octavia was storm blue and looked lovely when clean but quickly showed marks. I like the look of Davecarters black SM but wonder if it's a pain to keep looking so good. Even colours that I would have doubted look ok. Reds, beiges and even muscavado I could very happily live with.

I purchased an Autoglym Lifeshine kit from Ebay and think that this would particularly help keep up the appearance of the darker colours between washing. I find that my car gets dirty with use but then a shower of rain takes off a fair bit and keeps the car looking pretty good.

Your car will look GREAT in white Paul

Must admit I haven't yet seen a green one as that is one colour I just think does not work at all on this sort of boxy car, but if anyone has one maybe some pics ?

Ta Mr Mac, hope so .

I went for Aqua Blue and went through the same change my mind thought process as you are now. In the end I was pleased with my choice, you have to stick to your guns with your original decision.

With regards to the black, if you were driving a Superb estate you could see the resemblance to a hearse but a Yeti could only be a hearse for Chihuahuas. I have seen black Yeti's and they look pretty damned good. In the brochure I did not think the Yeti suited black but in real life........... GO FOR IT and have confidence.

Couple of pics of a green yeti here.

Stealth 170 hp Yeti's are WHITE

Like most things this is all down to personal opinion.

We went for Red. My wife will be driving it with my young son as a passenger and we wanted something bright, cheerful and easy to see for all the crazy drivers out there. That's why we went for DRLs too.

White does look good. But a bit commercial maybe, while black and any dark colours I just think blend into the background on a damp and dreary UK day, which is admittidly less of an issue with a funky looking vehicle like the Yeti.

But wouldn't life be boring if we were all the same.

My car is red, and I although personally I am happy with the colour I picked, black would have some advantages:

1) The black external window trim would look a lot more blended to the car, personally I think one good improvement to the car styling would be to paint or trim the metal door sections between the front and rear windows black to match the windowline

2) there are strips of visible paintwork inside around the door seals, these would be much less noticeable in black.

Personally If i had a black car I would stick with the black roof rails as well, and save my money.

Actually thats a lot better than I thought - the brochure makes it look a bit lighter than that, it looks OK though !!

James at Allams had one in last weekend with Gobi interior. Looked great.

It's the car that makes the colour, not the colour that makes the caremoticon-0136-giggle.gif

I think the only thing certain about Yeti colours are that 1) the brochure is abominable (pun intended) in showing their true colour and 2) no matter what the colour it still seems to suit the Yeti.

I initially plumped for the metallic green, then opted for red, toyed with Tangerine before ordering a Candy white one.

I now want a Brunello red one......

I do know if someone had described Muscovado to me I wouldn't have touched it with a barge pole. In the metal it looks brilliant which goes to show no amount of brochures or photos can really help you decide - actually seeing an SM on the move or static is undoubtedly the best way of making this most tricky of decisions.

Only another 20 days before my beastie gets its lick of paint :p

I tried to get SWMBO to opt for a Muscovado Yeti but she was having none of it, she wanted red or white. After the test drive we saw a black 1.8TSI on the forecourt and it looked great, SWMBO agreed.

By the way, what does the V5C show Muscovado as? Brown? emoticon-0114-dull.gif

We once had a red Agila which was known as a "Postman Pat" van and Postman Pat and Jess (the cat) sat on the dashboard (providing I wasn't driving it quickly - rolled a bit in corners -, in which case they tended to slide from side to side  ).

I've got an awful feeling they will be coming back when we get our red Yeti.

No indecision - she wants red! :S

Tell her there is a 28+ week wait for Red Yetis thanks to a large order from Royal Mail.................

Colour is a very personal thing indeed. But it also has to work with the design of a car and has to enhance the features. This paragraph is something I said in this post ( http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/158413-tangerine-yeti/ )regarding this:

I love that copper colour. But I still won't have picked it for my car. All metallic colours have a white base coat and when scratched that scratch shows up white and you can see them a mile off. Hence I never choose a colour darker than silver, Aqua blue and at a stretch Steel Grey. Also hides the dirt well as you can't really see when these coloured cars are dirty...

AND on some cars you need to see the shadows that the creases create to give "form" to the car. On my A2 for instance the wheels are a bit small relative to the height of the car. Thus the car has enlarged wheel arches with a very sharp crease to throw a shadow and pronounce them to make the wheels look better on lighter coloured cars. But get the A2 in black and the shadow is gone and the wheels look too small.

The Yeti however has a very plain two box shape so does not require shadow trickery to make the shape work. What it does have though is the Visor helmet glass lines front and back with a floating roof. Thus the A-pillar is black to form the front visor (the windscreen and front door glass), the B-pillar is body colour to separate the two visors and the from there back and around everything is black. So lighter coloured Yetis look by far the best. Thus on a Yeti in dark colours - and especially black - the colour completely hides this distinctive feature of the car's design and really just reduces the shape to a two box and nothing more. Also remember that on most cars there is a chrome line around the windows to define this shape when you get the car in dark colours. The Yeti does not have that so the a dark colour completely hides the Yeti's best design assests.

Again just my view on it and beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Thanks for all the advice. I've rationalised my decision as follows:

Sensible cars work best with playful colours (think how dreary Merc's look in silver)

Fun cars work best in sensible colours (Minis look great in dark silver)

Sort of Ying / Yang. Ergo Yeti (fun) goes well with black (sensible).

I have also just looked again at the black Yetis on the picture thread and they look great... mind you so do the white, brown, blue, green & red ones!
