Replace rear discs (mk1 oct vRS)

Featured Replies

Guys, im about to tackle a diy new REAR discs and need your advice. A few questions, do the discs come off with the carriers still on if i take the caliper off using the guide pins? Or do i have to take the whole caliper (including the carrier) off in one go, using the carrier mounting bolts?? If so, it looks like the carrier mount bolts is a large hex/allen key so what size is it? P.S Do you think i will need to wind back the piston? I have NEW pads and an old disc, so i assume it may only be a few mm difference with the new disc..

Thanks for your help,

Neil.

ok mate,

you need:

windback tool

7mm key. I have to buy a diff set as they dont seem to put 7mm in the cheap sets. sure its 7mm.

you need to remove the caliper and carrier to get the disk off. and the caliper needs winding back.

Cheers Billy,

I have tried a 7mm on the rear carrier mount but it seems way bigger? I think the 7mm fits the front caliper guide pins. I wish the Haynes book would state what size tools you need!

Any idea on a cheap wind back tool? Halfords sell Laser at £32!! which is way too much.

Cheers sivrs, just ordered that.

I've got one of these: http://www.sealey.co.uk/PLPageBuilder.asp?gotonode=ViewProduct&method=mViewProduct&productid=8689&productdescription=piston%20wind%20back&productcode=&category=0&catgroup=&catmicrogroup=&analysiscode=&requiredresults=16

As Billy said, calliper off first, then carrier, then disc retaining screw and disc. Why are you fitting old discs?!

Also, if you find a lip on the disc that catches on the old pads, you DO NOT need to grind the lip off to remove the calliper! So many people do this for some unknown "special" (mentally) reason. The pads are just stuck to the calliper, so you can easily slide the calliper off the pads, leaving them behind. It's easy.

Do you have new pad retaining springs/clips? Might be worth changing them while you are there, to keep the pads sliding nicely in the carrier. They are only a couple of quid, and just pull off and press on. They are the thin metal things that sit between the pad ears and carrier. If you don't replace them, just make sure you clean your old ones up.

Not much else to it really.....

Thanks guys, (i am putting NEW discs on)

I have managed to remove the caliper (2x13mm guide pins) but im unsure what size allen/hex is used for taking the carrier off?? anyone know the size?

Plus, i dont like the look of the splash guard, does anyone remove it?

Neil.

I've kept my splash guard on as the mintex discs on the rear of mine seem to corrode like nobodys business!

If you've got the caliper off it's worth checking the guide pins are moving in and out smoothly and greasing them up if not.
