Frayed/Damaged rear seatbelt....

Featured Replies

Hi, i have a 2006 VRS.

The seatbelt catch has eaten into the belt and it has frayed and cut into it...

It is difficult to manoeuvre the seatbelt...and potentially life threatening if the occupant behind decides its to much effort to put it on...

Are seatbelts covered by a lifetime warranty by Skoda?

Cheers

How badly? A frayed or torn seatbelt is an MoT fail, although mine has been slightly frayed where it got caught on the Velcro on a jacket, and has passed several MoTs since it happened. I don't think I've ever seen a badly frayed or torn seatbelts on any car I've ever been in, so I don't know whether you'd have a hard time proving the damaged wasn't caused by pets / kids / general abuse. But you can always ask - a 'no' doesn't cost you anything!!!

Its pretty bad...the buckle insert has cut through it. At least a 1/3rd of it is cut/frayed...

Tempted to superglue it and hope for the best. I am aware it could be an MOT fail :S

I reckon you'll have to get a price off a dealer - wouldn't trust something like that to a scrappy...

Sorry to crash your thread.. but it's related.

I got an Advisory on my last MOT for a fraying middle belt, it's really minor and more like a little tufft of fuzzy fluff right on the edge where it goes into the seat back,.. (Though, the garage I go to said the MOT guy they use is grumpy.. and in a bad mood that day, lol)..

How easy is it to change out a center 3 point belt.. please don't tell me a new seat back is required.. or even un stitching? Cuz the reels inside the seat, aint it?

Can't see any reason why they should be - nothing else is...

You could remove it to avoid an MOT failure. The requirements are:

A 3 point inertia reel belt on an outboard seat and a 3 point static or inertia reel belt, lap belt, disabled persons belt or child restraint for at least one other seat;

Doesn't the car being classed as a 5 seater come into it though?

No it doesn't. That requirement is derived from following the passenger car seat belt requirements flow chart for vehicles upto 8 passenger seats in section 5.1 of the MOT testers manual. The tester will as likely advise that a seat belt is not fitted in one of the rear seating positions.

Take the seats out completely?

The seatbelt concerned is the left hand side passenger one in the rear. It goes across the passenger...

So i can remove this???? and i wont fail an MOT?

Cheers

Check for yourself, here:

Manuals - Index

The last manual on that page, contents, next page, section 5, sub section 5.1.

The second flow chart should give you D, E, and J as the sections to look at in the table, section J covers the rear seat belt requirements.

Passing the MOT is one thing, safety is another, without a belt there you won't be able to carry a passenger in that seat.

Reason for rejection is a missing seatbelt - That's a fail isn't it?

It is a fail, but it says a statuatory seat belt missing. The flow chart tells you where to look to find out if the seat belt is statuatory, which will be section J of the table:

In forward facing rear seats any of the following;

I. A 3 point inertia reel belt on an outboard seat and a 3 point static or inertia reel belt, lap belt, disabled persons belt or child restraint for at least one other seat;

or

II. A static 3 point belt for one seat and a disabled person’s belt or child restraint for at least one other seat;

or

III. A 3 point belt, lap belt, disabled person’s belt or child restraint to each seat.

Removing the belt completely will meet the conditions of I above, which is the statuatory rear seat belt requirement for your car.

Take the rear seats out, takes 30 seconds, job done?
