Modification of a Turbo back exhaust

Featured Replies

I got a Piper turbo back exhaust fitted, but feel it's a bit loud between tickover and 1800 rpm. I am hence looking for a solution that would still allow gases to flow freely, yet quieten down the system a little. Anybody got an idea of what can be done and what budget I'd be looking at?

Cheers

I contacted an Exhaust centre and they think it might be worth fitting a Cherry Bomb centre silencer. Did have a look at http://www.cherrybomb.com/am_cms_media/87522.gif on http://www.cherrybomb.com/products/glasspack which describes the effect of one of these silencers, with same diameter but shorter.

the best way to describe the silencer is it looks like a CDA air intake (ie a cylinder which a larger centre part) and inside perforated mesh in a screw thread pattern. The purpose is to get the gases to spiral as the progress and the mesh "grates" the sound away, somehow. The guy did tell me he made this part himself but equally called it a cherry bomb (or possibly bowl, or ball) and said it would quieten the system for ~30%

Apparently the whole exhaust line will be taken out, the centre pipe will be cut and this box will be added, somewhere just before the bend going to the left rear shock.

I have NO idea what these things are worth and am looking for advice with regards to the effect of adding such item on a Piper SS exhaust system (resonance, effect on turbo, rattling, vibration, performance degradation...)

Any advice with regards to whether these cherries do actually work, their impact on the SS system and what they are worth, would be hugely appreciated!

:dull:

tbh i don't think a cherry bomb is your answer... they use a straight through design iirc, and they are expensive too..

as an alternative you can buy perforated tubes that you can insert in to the tailpipe for a lot less wedge

Hi there

thanks for the reply, I thought: even if the silencer is more or less 'straight-through', the fact that there are louvres to rasp, would make a diff??

Hello

Just thought I'd close the topic:

I went to Maidstone Exhaust Centre and all I can say is: TOP QUALITY.

These guys know what they are doing, have always respected the times and quotes they gave me. (I had to go back because the back box was moving sideways and causing a noise and they did not charge me for the 30 mins work they did.)

The place might not look like your usual exhaust centre, but they take pride in what they are doing and goes a long way in my opinion.

Would I recommend: yes

Price range: cheap to reasonable

addtionaly comments: they also do very good deals on tyres
