How good are the Yeti's brakes?

Featured Replies

Well I'm driving my 2 youngest girls to the Horse riding school like we do every Sunday, going up a fairly steep bank doing 40mph, when this silver Honda civic 03 reg (I remember that part!) didn't look to his right as he pulled out of a junction in front of me at the point were I was maybe 10 - 15 feet away from him! Immediately I slammed on the brakes, tyres were screeching, and I think every braking safety device must of kicked in at this point as my Yeti ended up in the opposite lane and I avoided a collision.

I'm certain the Honda driver made a genuine mistake as he and his girlfriend made apologetic gestures when both vehicles had stopped, so no bad feelings I guess.

The only injury was my youngest has a small scratch on her arm and I was a little shaken up as I've never had to do this kind of manoeuvre before. :(

If I had braked half a second later it would of been a different post!

Thankfully this car has fantasic braking power

I think of the brakes as a 2 tone effect - as you press the brakes for every day driving, and when needed the pedal seems to go a little further when you truly need stopping power!

Hi BH,

glad to hear your all safe and well  that could have been very; well :S

do you have ESP or the ASR system on your Monster :wonder: whichever I think unfortunatly you have be made to test out the MBA system (Mechanical Brake Assist)

Regards,

TP

No ESP (I think it should be standard on every car) but it has ASR, and yes it all seemed to work rather well when called upon :)

Hi BH, glad nobody was seriously hurt. At least you have proved to yourself you can act quickly and correctly in this situation without panicing

This kind of incident just goes to show how advanced technology has made motoring safer, but it's NO substitute for common sense ;)

You have demonstarted to us that you have PLENTLY of thet

Good that everyone was OK.

I agree that allowing any car on sale in the UK now without ESP is crazy. No doubt they have saved a few pounds per car by not doing it, but it is the one thing I really don't like about Skoda. Pure cost cutting or forcing you to "spec up" a car so you can have the safety feature that should be standard.

The lack of ESP on Skoda's is proving expensive; I keep having to buy 4x4 or new to get this option  Please SUK drop the bling (e.g. fancy alloys, full climate control etc.) and opt for safety first

ESP is getting more and more standard within Skoda now. petrol DSG Octavias, 4x4 and Scout models, also vRS and L&K have it standard now. Fabia DSG and vRS has it standard now. The higher spec Superbs come with it standard.

But I admit it would be nice if all the models came with ESP standard, I think in 3-5 years every car sold in the UK will be fitted with it as standard.

ESP will become mandatory on all new cars sold. I think that this will start late next year and will be phased in when new models are introduced.

The OPs Yeti must have bought the emergency brake assist into play. Previous surveys have shown that under emergency braking, people don't always use enough force on the brake pedal. The emergency brake assist will gauge the seriousness of the situation by the time it takes to come off the accelerator onto the brake and how much force you are using on the brake and then instruct the braking system to give it maximum.

I recall when my son was learning to drive. I took him out in our Honda FRV which was fitted with brake assist and more.

He wanted to practice his emergency stop.

We found a quiet, straight road and at the allotted signal (remember, he was 18 years old and 6 feet of muscle!) he pressed the footbrake as hard as he could. The car stopped so fast it almost stood on its nose. We had to stop to catch our breath.

All he could say was "heck!"
