G60+VR6 conversion - Getting bad Judder!

Featured Replies

Morning all, I had the G60-VR6 Conversion fitted about 2 weeks ago. Was lovely when I first picked it until last week when I carried a hill start and noticed a small amount of judder. This is getting progressively worse and is only in first and reverse. I have covered enough miles to "bed in " the clutch during witch time I was not harsh with it at all. I realise that going from DMF to SMF I will feel more throught the clutch but surely this is not right!? The car is going in to the garage next week but Im pretty dissapointed TBH. I supplied quality parts (Sachs clutch, new flywheel, all the correct bolts and screws etc) . Hopefully its not the clutch or flywheel and its just a mount. Anyone else had problems like this??

Just a thought - but I've been fitting a 6speed box recently, and was looking over short-shifter options for this setup.

During this research, Oet mentioned he'd read on another forum about the effects of over-tightening the shift mechanism, leading to gear/clutch issues.

maybe something "easy" to look @ first ? ...

It's not a problem with the setup, because loads of people have done it with no issues, and the 02J gearbox has been fitted with normal flywheels in the past as standard.

It sounds to me like it's not bedded in properly. How many miles have you done (not including motorway/carriageway cruising)? Maybe you've been too gentle on it! You need to slip it to bed the friction disc to the flywheel and coverplate, if they don't bed in to eachother then you will not get perfect contact, and it will judder. The idea behind bedding it in gently, is so you don't eat too much of the friction disc away to begin with, making the clutch last a bit longer. Maybe try riding the clutch a bit more to force the bed-in. Or just give her a few more revs when pulling away until it properly beds and the judder clears. I'm fairly certain this will sort you out.

If it was contamination from a leaking slave cylinder, crank end seal or gearbox input shaft seal then I'd expect the clutch to slip in any gear. And if the coverplate wasn't bolted down correctly, I doubt the car would even move!

Hope that helps Dan.

bodge - Thanks for your helpful (as always) advice mate  . I'll try slipping it for a bit to see what happens. I guess I have covered a couple of hundred miles since fitting (excluding motorway miles)

SnowMuncher - Thats very interesting. The gagrage fitted my quick shift at the same time as the clutch and F/W so its possible i guess. I may have a word with them although I trust the guy that fitted it all as he normally works on my car.

I also have a SMF G60 clutch kit for more than a year now. I think it's normal to chatter a bit in 1st gear and at idle. I'm sure there's nothing to worry about.

Its not chatter though, that I wouldnt mind. Its a pronouced judder/shudder. Just been out and been slipping the clutch constantly for 10 mins of driving but still juddery.

I think mine does the same in 1st gear. But only in 1st. I guess it's normal. I'm not sure, though. Any suggestions?

Perhaps its down to the fact that the car is originally fitted with a DMF and once you change to a solid it removes any "give " in the flywheel, therefore its a lot more responsive and we are feeling that. ?

UPDATE: 3 and a half months in and Im still getting bad judder. Stuck on the M25 yesterday driving back from Cambridge and I was crawling along in traffic. The judder was quite evident. The clutch and Flywheel must be bedded in by now surely? Not sure what to do next. I guess I need the garage to remove both parts and check them over?

Dan

Well, check the bearing, perhaps in requires some greasing. It strikes me that your problem has to do something with the declutching.

I know its been almost a year since the last post on this topic but I just thought I'd say all is good. Im not convinced that it was judder. The car went back into the garage a couple of times with no faults found. I just carried on driving it BUT changed my driving style. Im now (finally ) very happy with it, especially after driving my works van (07 corsa with DMF) and then jumping into the Skud.
