Can you recommend some wheels for winter?

Featured Replies

Can anyone recommend a manufacturer/retailer for some wheel rims for winter use?

I'm looking for a budget of around <>£500 for both rims & winter tyres.

TIA.

ES.

PS. It's for a 09 FL Octavia, 1.8 TSi (Elegance), currently with 17" alloys.

Steelies :thumbup::D

Yep, personally I'd look at some steel wheels originally from a base model Golf Mk5/6 or Jetta Mk5. These often come up on eBay as owners upgrade to alloys.

You can then fit some winter spec rubber to these.

AND save a few bob ;)

I just picked up a set of Audi A3 wheels from ebay for £100:

They are the correct size (16" x 6.5J, PCD112.5) and offset (ET50) for the Octavia and they also clear the front brakes on a vRS as shown above.

I will be fitting some 205/55R16 91H Hankook winter tyres and the whole lot will end up costing about £400.

I can't seem to find any at the moment, unless I'm not putting the right things in!

I'm looking for 16" Steel Rims or Alloy Rims, with a 112 bolt fitting & offsets of between 40-50.

I can find these: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-TRANSPORTER-STEEL-WHEELS-6X16-T4-CADDY-5X112-/270534236195?pt=UK_CarParts_Acc_Wheels_tyres_Trims_Car_Rims_ET&hash=item3efd18d823#ht_1158wt_911

which I've found before, but am unsure whether they're the right fitment.

I'm going to be selling a pair of Nokian WR and VW sell steel rims in 6J format, which would be the wheels tyres for use should you wish to use chains.

According the the sizes on that link, those T4 wheels should fit ok.

I was starting to think about this too lol

is it better / safer to run 16s or 17s?

There is a greater choice of tyre in the 16" size (205/55) and they are cheaper than the 17". If you have upgraded to some monster 4 pot brakes though, then 16" wheels probably won't fit.

I have some Audi A6 16" X 7" PCP 112 Offset ET 45.

I'm sanding them and painting them ready for 205 55 16 Winter Tyres

Rearrange this lot to make a useful phrase: Touch Barge Pole With A Wouldn't.... With a rating of 78%!

mytyres.co.uk are doing steel wheels shod with new winter tyres at around the £400+ mark for a set of 4 if that's any use...

Can someone clear something up for me please? When I go to mytyres and put in the model etc for steels with winter tyres I get loads of different sizes offered, I assume all will fit but which would be best to go for and what impact would this have on insurance as the standard size is not an option.

Thanks

Andy

You need to check that all of the dimensions are appropriate for your car. So mine would need a 16x6J or 6.5J, PCD 112 + Offset of between 45-50.

I've been looking for some Nokian tyres WR G2's, I can get them for about £73 each, I just need some rims to put them on (approx £100), plus someone to fit them (£40). The best I can get them is around £450 mark at the moment.

And where would you find that information?

Andy puts his stupid hat on :-(

Have a look at your spare wheel, it will hopefully have the size ect stamped on it.

Can I ask a question??

Why would anyone bother changing the wheels/tyres for winter?? emoticon-0124-worried.gif

Because in temperatures below 7C the effectiveness/grip of summer tyres deminishes dramatically as the temperature drops further.

I was wondering why as well. Are you saying you use summer only tyres during the summer?

That clip pretty much sums it all up!
