Following on from my thread in 'introduce yourself' milage on fab vrs

Featured Replies

Hi all

am getting a fab vrs :D at the end of next month (well start viewing to buy)

Right.

I am an apprentice In car body repair, so body work is not an issue. I have a budget of about 3.5k, so it either gunna be a high milage or bad body work. Or a bit of both. But my main concern is the milage of the car. Recently we have had an Ibiza pd130 at work on like 160-170k, ran like new, my boss even said they are fine with stupid high miles. Just as long as they have been well serviced, maintained etc. Will they still work well with mods with high milage? Have made sure I have 400£ extra for a map ;)

I am incredibly paranoid about my cars and will address any knock sqeak etc (I own a corsa so have an orchesta of these to keep my heart racing lol), but being a vaux man, I know with these engines, even if well maintained they will still get tired over 100k.

In a nutshell I want to know the sort of high milage boundry where you say, it's just not worth it, in a vaux it's roughly 100k, could be 160k in a fab? I know this is such a grey area, and sounds so so stupid. But I am clueless. I am hoping people can help me out

I have little knowledge on these engines apart from the good reputation they have.

Have already learnt alot from this site and I hope once I get my fab, I can contribute alot better :D

Oh and what are the years for a mk1 fab and mark 2?

Sorry for the noon questions!

You wont get a MK2 vRS for 3.5k ;)

As long as the car has been well maintained and serviced regularly, then high mileage cars can be good. Personally i always look fo low mileage/owners on any car i buy

Just a quick autotrader search............

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/search/used/cars/skoda/fabia/postcode/ka15hn/radius/1501/keywords/vRS/price-to/4000/sort/priceasc

(1st one's a CAT D though........)

Personally i'd look at the last one....................

Hello welcome to brisky.

First, mileage isnt a massive issue as its been looked after and serviced correctly. Mine is on 146,000 miles, was a company car to start with, and then me. I mapped it at about 123,000 and front mount went on couple of months ago. The age the fabia`s are at now, i`d rather one with 80/90/100k on it than one with 20/30k on it any day.

That said, your look at the very bottom of the scale, so if i were you, id spend the extra £400 on the car in the first place, then just wait a couple of months for the map. (which btw a decent custom map can be had for £250 ;)

The engine is so common in various cars, some cabs using the engine have done well over 200,000 miles.

Matt

i have only owned mine for 2 monthe baught it with 93k on , and im hoping it lives till al least 200,000k pluss ! :giggle:

If it was me id limit it on any car to 70k/80k

Wow to be fair I was expecting people to say oh don't get a 100k +! result!

Well 400£ for a map will be done at AMD Essex. But I have today put it in my new car fund, would like to get used to 130bhp then go to 180 so I can really appreciate it. Main reason I wanted to was because I assumed it would feel a dog after driving my corsa (175bhp roughly) but it is meant to be so different to drive. And I fancy some comfort for once

I was looking for a mk1, probably an 03. I was just wondering on the year boundries for each.

If I was gunna get one already in a crash would probably just get one at action and do it, but don't want to have a categorically written off car.

I am about to have a proper look through your link cheers for that

The tdi Ibiza pd130 at my work ran like new on 170k, was shocked.

I am really glad to know a 100k milage car is still by all means good. I was starting to get really worried!

Any traits of a tired engine? Any thing I should look out for in a vrs?

Thanks alot for the walm welcome everyone :)

53plate will be the oldest you're likely to get! There's a handful of 03plated press and dealer demos kicking around but not many!

A serviced and maintained car should easily see 250kemoticon-0148-yes.gif

The engine itself is pretty solid, but listen for the turbo, they make a small amount of noise anyway, but loud police siren noises arnt great. Possibly budget for on at some point in your ownership. It's not massively expensive, and a perfect chance to upgrade, but worth thinking about. A Used standard turbo with reasonable miles would be £200ish plus £100ish fitting.

There's a few bits that are common issues, leaky rear doors, standard bushes don't last long, and are normally uprated to cupra ones. But overall, they stand up to the miles very well. As I said, got mine with 111,000 miles on it, my mate had one with half that at the time, felt no different, drove as well, gears still felt nice and smooth, and mine was actually quieter.

Matt

as above the engine its self is good for maybe even 200,000 + mile,

its all the other stuff round it like the turbo , clutch , gearbox, injectors

................... :giggle: :giggle: :giggle: Only Kidding!!! I'd agree with Mike on this one.

You ain't gonna get a perfect car when it isn't brand new. You can however get a good, tidy example. Mileage isn't a problem as long as it is serviced regular and well maintained. I have had to replace certain items on mine like auxilary belt and tensionser (due to tensioner being seized). You are never guaranteed to get a 'trouble free' car when buying as you can never tell when these things are going to give up. Items will eventually need to be replaced due to general wear and tear dependant on the car/driver etc.......On the other hand you could get years of trouble free motoring. Make sure timing chain has been done every 60,000 miles an all.

Ah yeah I'd forgot about the clutch, listen for DMF too, but gearbox is bulletproof.

Gearbox isnt bullet proof!

Mines shat the main shaft at 65k!

The engine may do 200k+

but its other things that perish

Bushes, brake lines, suspension components, clutches, turbo's

haha well i am prepared for that . . (braided brake lines, poly bushers, coilovers :D:D)

Its more the block, i am glad to hear the engines dont start getting awful.

Are you not meant to get an uprated clutch when you start pushing over standard power (like140+) i am sure i read somewhere about leons eating standard clutches.

I am very pleased to hear all this, i hope your not all grooming me into getting a skoda jjst so there is another briskoda'd car on the road ;)

And to the above about the uprated turbo, dont you have to use a hybrid turbo, and then the car HAS to be mapped to suit?

cheers all :thumbup::D

mine is on its first clutch , at 97k with a remap to 170-180bhp and 280-300lbs ? so the standard one is ok for this if you dont really try to kill it,

anything above that and you must uprate it , banana knows more than me about mods tho ! :giggle:

The Fabia vRS Mk1 ran from 2003 to 2007, the Blue Special Editions (SE) marking the end. The Mk2 vRS has just come out, over the last few months with a basic price of £15,700.

The Mk1 had a slight change in late 2005, with slightly different rear lights, different engine code (from ASZ to BLT). On Rolling Roads the later BLT produces more power, however they often suffers from a hesitation or Stutter due to the EGR. There are slight differences in Car tax rates due to different emissions.

True, but there's lots of people running big power thru them, and it's very rare to hear of one breaking. In standard guise, I doubt there's many issues with them.

The bonus is, if your after modding one, and get a higher mile one like I did, all the bits that knacker can be uprated as they fall off.

Matt

You got a B C20XE?

ha matt i like your thinking :)

nothing excites me more than pretty replacement parts, silicone hoses, braided brake lines, nice new brakes.

I genuinly cant thank everyone enough for how helpful they have been, i am sure this is the first forum i have gone on, asked a stupid question and not been abused for it, or had loads of sarcastic comments.

Have my car fund there just need to sell my current to finally have enough money

the outcome of this seems to be:

A fabia vrs has a good strong engine IF looked after properly will last a loooong time, buying one with 100k miles is no issue, providing what i said before.

They have a few standard niggles but nothing too much of a ball ache (turbos, and other parts that degrade over time)

Make sure timing chain has been done every 60,000 miles an all.

The vRS doesn't have a chain - it has a belt...

Yes i have a corsa b c20xe,

It is white lowered 80mm at the front on coilovers and 90mm on the back with shortened shock and custom springs.

Has sport bumpers full colour coded in bmw graphite grey (trying to keep the oem look)

Tigra scuttle/laguna splitter

White compmotive mo5's

Opel badges mudflaps etc (genuine)

Engine:

early dizzy pack c20xe,

f20 box

fast road cams

porus head mod

power cap

half red silicome hoses

300bhp custon drive shafts

oversized manifold

sports cat in exhaust

The new one also comes as an estate - approx £16,495 from memory - check up if you need the right answer.

Incorrect! The facelift and engine change didn't occur together.

The facelift occurred at September 2004 and involved several mainly cosmetic changes introduced in a rolling cycle over a period. The main obvious changes are different rear lights, absence of rear door lock buttons, changed fascia top texture (though this wasn't on mine) and a price increase (not on mine either)

There was also an earlier gearbox change in late 2003/ early 2004.

The engine change occurred in late 2005 and though rated the same at 130bhp people report it achieving better results - although earlier ones were also said to be better than the 130bhp rating. Possibly that was optimistically low to improve the insurance rating? The stutter should have been cured already as a warranty issue following an official fix being made available - mine doesn't appear to suffer from it.

Car tax is curious having increased then decreased over the period but teh dates wquoted on a recent thread don't fully tie up with the changes in specification.

Leather became an expensive dealer fitted option in early 2006.

Otherwise there were very few changes during the model's life. Unlike Mazda for instance there wasn't a flood of special editions, only the cheap when new but expensive when secondhand SE which commands a significant premium - say £2k...
