LED Sidelights

Featured Replies

One of my sidelights has blown, and I want to change them to LED ones so they match my factory Xenons.

What are the restrictions with fitting them? I hear that it sends a light on the dash or something?

I'll be buying on the Bay tonight, so quick replies would be appreciated :)

If it makes any difference, my car's a 2004 53plate ASZ.

get some smd 9 leds ones mate, they work fine, pass the mot and it doesnt put the light on the dash on either.I have them and they look great!

i've had no problems with mine

Bought them :D thanks everyone.

I fitted the 9 LED sidelight bulbs, excellent, and needed to convert them so they were Daylight Running Lights when the ignition was on.

I removed the side/headlight switch from the dash, working at the back of the switch I spliced into the thick Red/Black (becomes live when ignition is switched on) wire and took a wire to a remote on/off switch (located in the diagnostic access area behind the flap) from the switch I took two wires each with an RS inline 4001 Diode (they are like one way valves) and spliced one to the thin Grey/Red wire and the other to the thin Grey/Black wire, this then by-passes the side light switch. I fitted Diodes just in case it created a feed back problem.

Note the current flows through the Diode and exits at the silver end, when a current is fed from the silver end it simply blocks the current from passing through.

This now allows all four side lights to automatically switch on when the ignition is in the 'on' position, without using a relay and still allowes the current to pass through the original sidelight fuses.

Used in conjunction with 9 LED SMD T10 W5W 501 light Bulbs Ultra White, this now gives you part high definition lighting from single LED bulbs.

Passed it's MOT OK on Tuesday.

Done the plate lights too which are sweet. Waiting for some Xenon's for the main beams to come and an interior light to finish it off. I have bought a red coloured bulb as well as a white one to see what its like in the interior light.... Thinking about replacing the rear lights too with LED's too.

My 3 way interior lamp is also fitted with LEDs, The small ones either side the same as

my link above. And a 12 smd LED festoon in the centre. B)

They are much whiter and brighter now.

Not to everyones taste but I prefer the whiter light.

My 1.2 classic only has one large festoon halgoen in it. I've ordered a festoon LED with 15 lights on it, so should be bright if the rear plate lights are only 3. They are pretty bright as it is.

If you want whiter brighter sidelights that aren't LED's (I think technically if the Police pull you they can do you as the bulb isn't e-marked) I highly rate Osram 21d cool blue sidelight bulbs.

Not sure if the effect is very clear in these pictures. On the left of the picture is a Halfords Laser Blue, on the right the Osram 21d.

I don't think so.

It's against the law to drive on sidelights after lighting up time, therefore using them during the daytime I doubt you are breaking the law.

The highway code states that you must drive on dipped headlamps after lighting up time,

However I stand to be corrected.

Recieved them this morning :D will fit and take pictures in due course

Those are the ones I got and I'm well impressed with them :)

I'll go find the shop I think. They are in Liversedge where I live handy that!

Even a place that sells LED bulbs states they're not technically road legal http://www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk/blog/42/led-bulbs/ due to having no e-marks. I believe it is Construction and Use regulations act which states cars must have e-marked lighting. ISTR the law is that even in daylight all bulbs must meet regulations, i.e. you could still be done for having a dud headlight dip beam bulb in the daytime, but it's highly unlikely.

I think so long as they're white (not blue, red, green or whatever), and don't dazzle other road users, the Police would leave you alone and you'd pass the MOT. You'd have to come across a really @n@l officer to do you over some white LED's - but just making clear that the letter of the law is that LED bulbs are not ok in terms of the letter of the law, albeit possibly otherwise in actual practice.

Looks really smart, which ones are they?

Sorry to drag up an oldish thread, but i thought i'd write an update as i purchased the above LED's following your recommendation :)

Ordered them on Wednesday night and they turned up today - nice quick delivery! Thought i'd have a go at putting them in when i got in from work. Took me 20 mins or so and a bit of swearing etc... but no where near as difficult as i expected (the battery side i actually found easier than the drivers side!!). Chuffed with the results for a five quid mod. Took pics but they're really poor i'm afraid as my phone cam is rubbish!! They look a lot better now its gone darker :)

Thanks for the recommendaton!

Don't want to worry you but somebody nicked your caravan while you were fitting the LED's.

Cheers

Looking good Marc :)

I'm glad you're happy with them

I've been linking these any chance I get for a good

9 months now. The page is in my favourites ;)

I love the bright dot effect when you look directly at the car

and the boomerang reflections in the bottom of the headlamp housing B)

Not the best LEDs out there but great value for money and good quality too

As you say a great mod for a fiver. Very white and not at all bluey and chavvy looking.

They even look good in the housing when off. Thats what inspired me to yellow up my fogs.

Mine have been in a year and have gone through an mot without a murmur from the tester

and during that time haven't degraded at all unlike cheaper LEDs I have tried which start to dim

and become blue-ish after just a few months. They're very effective in the maplights too.
