Running in VRS CR engine.

Featured Replies

All,

Finally my VRS will be with me on Tuesday (Order mid May!) but wanted some advise on running in the new CR lump.

Over the years I have had a few new engines/rebuilds on petrol and always taken it easy and mostly off boost for the first 3-500 miles and still been carefull right up to about 1000 miles however.... never had to run in a diesel lump....

I have heard that you should just take it easy for the first 100'ish miles then drive it as you would normally?

Any advice or knowledgeable experience?

Thanks

Appologies to all those who are still waiting...... :(

my advice would be try and keep up with me as i come off the end of the m4 into west wales, seriously though, i drove mine quite hard using the full rev range and maybe not keeping the revs as low as i should and its barely used a drop of oil gets 50mpg, also got a lot more pokey around 5000 miles.

Yep black VRS hatchback private plate W4 PLD give us a wave/flash if you see me, the most fun you'll have is the uphill stretch from pontabraham to ammanford, the looks you get off bmw etc owners as you leave their 318's trying to keep up with your diesel Skoda on the uphill section is priceless, try it sometime!

this is my advise, not everyone would agree...just drive it normally, I would advise NOT to baby it,this can apparently cause problems with diesels not bedding in properly... when you need full throttle, use it, when you need to red line it, do..... I always do this, and have never had a problem, owned the vRS from new, did 80k, drove it normally from the start, and never had a problem... only think I would suggest is don't boot it from cold, and let it "cool" with a gentle drive for the last few miles to where you're gonna turn it off....

I've owned the fiat from new, and done over 100,000 miles now, drove it as normal from new, had it mapped at 4k! never had to put a drop of oil in it, all original turbo/clutch/gearbox ect, still drives like new

the most I've done in a new car was a citroen saxo VTR, ran that to 149,000 miles, and the engine was a gem, even at that mileage, the gearobox fell out, but hey, it was a citroen!

let it warm up then drive normally using the full range is what Id do.

my 58 plate used maybe .5 a litre in the first 2000 miles, after that not a drop.

I was told it was normal to use a small amount when running in.

Ill do the same with the 60 plate, got 300 on the clock so far. will check oil this weekend.

Totally agree with the above. Running in engines is a myth, they have all been benchmarked in the factories. Driven my petrol Vrs as normal from day one. Mapped at 800 miles, now on 11k and is sweet as a nut.

I agree with sharkrider, have some fun with your new motor from day one, no need to rev the bo....ks off it all the time, just give it some full throttle. The thing about bedding in is to do with the piston rings making a good seal against the cylinder bores. To do this properly they need to be under pressure, that pressure is provided by the "bangs" in the cylinders when the fuel is injected being big enough to not only push the pistons down, but push the rings against the sides along their full length in order for them to rub hard enough against the sides of the cylinders to form a matching seal, that way the oil control is much better and the power produced is much better from day one.

So the best advice is to ENJOY!!!!!

mine was an ex demonstrator VRS from Sinclair in Swansea. It has 2000 miles on it when i got it in june. Its got 7500 on it now and i drive heads of the valleys @ 70mph every day and it dosent miss a beat. I did run in all my previoud cars but couldnt be bothered with this one and it dosent seem to have made any diofference. Just ENJOY!

Someone once asked Colin McRae the same question........

"If in doubt.............

Seriously.

I have never run in a diesel and NEVER had any problem at all.

I still havent had to put any oil in since delivery in March
