Oh, well, winter tyres again....

Featured Replies

So, to make my weekend a happy one, can someone confirm that a set of 16", 5 stud, 112, et45, 7J, Audi alloy wheels will be suitable for winter tyres of width 205 or 215 - and that paying £95 for them was a bargain?? :wonder:

All I need now is a SM to put them on!!

Hi Mr. P,

should be OK, just need to confirm the centre hole is 57

7J x 16 ET45 5 x 112 x 57

Price looks good too: new Spectrum alloys of the Yeti 'S' are about £120 apiece.

All VAG wheels are 57.1mm, so these will be fine (depending on the ET the Yeti uses.

Depending on the condition and style the price is OK also.

Hi,

First time posting on the forum as I'm very interested in the current discussion. I'm waiting for the arrival of my Aqua Blue 140CR 4x4 Elegance any time now after placing my order back in early May!!

I would like to fit a set of winter tyres and it looks like I'll go for the 7Jx16 steels with 215/60 R16 tyres.

I have some questions I'm sure someone can answer.

Are Skoda okay with fitting steels to a 140 CR Yeti?

Will the wheel nuts from the alloys work or do I need a set for steels? If you go for the steels do people also fit the "Rif" trims from the E or do they look okay without?

Any helpful hints in making my insurance company understand that this is not a modification but a good safety feature?

Thanks

The manual lists which steel wheels you can fit as winter tyres so they are fine with it.

You can use the exact same nuts from the alloys on the steel wheels as they have the same shape - someone posted a technical diagram showing that on here before but I can't find it now.

You don't need to fit full Rif trims. Any VW or Skoda small centre cap will fit and they are much cheaper. Something like this or this or this or indeed a proper Skoda one (which is what I hope to fit to mine) - click here. You just need to make sure the back is the same as that of the T5 versions though (fit for steel wheels) and that they are not centre caps meant for alloys.

Look guys, from a non tyre expert perspective, this debate about wheel and tyre sizes etc........for those of us who have to take the budget option of just changing over to winter tyres but on our existing 17" wheels, are they still going to perform well in bad weather ?? I for one cant afford a whole set of new wheels and tyres as well ?

Yes they will perform better than an all season tyre due to the compound.

You say you can't afford wheels as well ..... but to remove your all season tyres, fit winters, then remove the winters to re fit the all seasons will cost upwards of £80 (£10 per swap over) the winters will also last you at least 2 years so it's now doubled the cost, you can pick up a set of used alloys or steels from eBay from upwards of £50, cutting down the hassle and cost.

Haven't you got to be careful you only use Skoda approved wheels incase of problems and need work doing under warranty ??

There's no issue with fitting Skoda approved parts such as steel wheels from the Yeti 'E'. It's making an overseas insurance call centre understand what your doing that's the problem

This is the route I took but opted for 205/55 tyres along with fitting the 'Rif' wheel covers. Wanted to keep an authentic Yeti look however as mentioned above there not cheap.

The VAG wheel bolts are designed to fit both VAG alloy or steel wheels but may not match an after-market product.

You may have come across it in the Yeti Tech pages but there's a guide to wheels here My link

Oh and this is our 'Pat' running on winters earlier this year;

There are loads of genuine VAG wheels available.

I would like to see Skoda say that Audi, VW or Seat wheels are not to Skoda's standard :giggle:.

A really interesting thread. I've being doing a lot of reading about Winter tyres and it seems to be a really good idea on many fronts.

Here is what I am intending do: I will just keep my wheels as they are, and get mytyres to supply and fit a pair of Winters in the same size as my current 225/50 Dunlops. Then, come spring I can then just get any local fitter to swap the tyres back. This should also hopefully preserve the summers for longer- I do 8000 miles a year and will keep the car for three years. So I will need a new set of tyres anyway in the next couple of years, so I may as well get the Winter's now, and share the mileage between the summer and winter's

I understand what people say about buying a cheap pair of wheels of off eBay by the time you pay for all the switching, but a: I would quite like to keep my 17's- the maker intended it that way! and b: I'm not sure what the insurance company will make of it all. Plus, because I do not have a jack etc, to change the wheels I would need to go to a fitter anyway, so I might as well just stick to a tyre change.

Anyone see any problems with any of this?

As to which Winters to choose, I can across this link which is the results of a German magazine test on various tyres.

I think I am going to go for the Dunlop Winter Sport's, as they have the best wet and dry weather performance- not as good as others in snow, but living in London, if it snows,I just won't drive- its more greasy and wet roads that I will need help on. Plus, I like the idea of keeping the OEM tyre brand currently on my car- I'm sure the car's set up was optimized for Dunlops, so I'll keep it that way.

mytyres will supply and fit the tyres for £580 or so.

The car will of been fitted with tyres that Skoda have done the latest deal with - they use many different manufacturers, not just Dunlop.

I'm confused, you said a pair of tyres, then said £580! surely that is for a set of 4? (my set of 4 Nokian winter 205/55/16's cost £310 from mytyres).

Can anyone remember the size of the 17" tyres on the 2.0 140bhp elegance ??

Thanks for the picture. Looks great. I know the Rif trims are expensive but as I will be keeping the car for 4 or 5 years I think they may be worth it.

Yes, on a BMW 316 and a Passat. They do work. And yes, you can fit them to a 4 x 4.

Your conclusion to favour the best wet performance is spot on. You might find that the tyres yu selected are not available in the right size for the Yeit.

The OEM brand is of no significance, Skoda and other manufacturers spec a certain type of tyre, but make sure there are more than two possible suppliers, so they can platy the suppliers against each other on price, and have a secure supply iof any of the manud´facturers have a supply problem.

Mike read this thread. Socks are a no-no on tarmac as you will schred them to bits within a mile. So of little use unless you are really, really stuck on snow.

Forgive me if this is a repeat of a previous post, but just came across a deal on Mytyres, where you can order steel wheels with fitted winter tyres. Interesting point about this is that the Yeti is listed as a 16 inch steel wheel 7 x 16, with a selection of 215/60 or 205/55s various makes. The charge per wheel for Nokian WGR2s is £138, which is not that much more than the cost of the tyre.

Might help someone out.

Depends on what you call "not that much more"? I paid £77.50 for 205/55/16 94 XL' Nokian WG R2's, for the £60 (per wheel) difference you could easily of bought a set of alloys (£200) plus fitting (£40)
