Electrical Faults

Featured Replies

I seem to be having further issues with my Fabia VRS 04... here's the story.

I brought it about a year ago and all through the time from around September 09 to May 10 it had issues with intermittent steering loss, when hitting full lock or steering suddenly. It also cuts out the stereo and makes the links flicker violently. Obviously this only really happened when parking. Here's what I've tried...

  • Waterproofing the car in terms of checking seals and wax coating the electrical wiring looms etc.
  • New alternator was fitted, and then the issue repeated so I go the old 1 put back in

The problem ceased throughout the whole summer, living in England I can only conclude that its affected more by temperature than the damp... seeing as it rained a heck of a lot over the summer.

I've got some ideas, but wanted to run them by you guys first. A lot of people seem to be having a similar issues but nobody seems to be sure exactly what it is. Some live with it, but to be honest, I'm sick of it... I love my car to bits, but it really ruins it quite a lot no knowing if it can steer properly.

I've got it booked in for a week on Monday, so I need to cram some ideas. Anyways... heres some food for thought...

G250 sensor – possible issue with this...

Steering Angle Sensor – I’ve heard this referenced a lot... seems to be very common

Overcharging the alternator

Faulty yaw sensor on the steering rack?

Battery or sensor (new battery fitted in the last 5months) – Maybe sensor?

Faulty power cable, apparently running from the starter motor to the battery complex

Motor to the pump or a diode inside the pump

Thanks for you time y'all

Matt

If the alternator is overcharging you need to sort this out first.

Does the charge light come on when you first turn on the ignition?

What is the voltage at the battery with the engine running?

There are either 2 or 4 wires clipped to the thick alternator charge cable. If there are 4 wires then ignore the 2 thicker wires as they are for the mag a/c clutch. Check the alternator wires are not broken. It is common for a break to occur at the connector above the starter motor.

Check the battery terminals, earthing

Under the battery, if the battery is removed there is a fluid tank for the power steering fluid check that its on the correct level

Cheers for the replies... the engine management light and battery symbol light come on, when starting up, both are gone by the time the engine is started....

I assumed the battery light was just because the electrics were on... i.e. warning you it is using power direct from the battery...?

Dodgey connections are all well and good... but I'm almost certain it's temperature related... its not done it at all throughout summer....

Still think I should check bits?

Matt

having the same trouble with my car now someone mentioned to me that it could be to do with the battery im gona check volts and amps and see what i can find out if i discover anything ill let you know :)

Check the fuses on top of the battery. The big metal blade ones. If it's temp related, one or more of them may have cracked.

Cheers again... great feedback.

It's irritating isn't it, keep me posted though. I will let you know any discoveries I make too.

I did get a new battery a while back and that didn't actually fix it... I'm assuming the fuses are separate from the battery itself though? Are they on the module on top?

Might check at lunch.

Sorry if I'm being pretty dumb here.
