when i had an oil change done 5k miles ish ago i was told that the thread wasnt very tight anymore and it needed a helicoil fix doing on it next time and was qouted £60 for it doing so as its due a service and mot is it going to be better to just get a new sump ? after talking to my dad who has done them a few times he has concerns about them and said it may be worth just paying the little extra and getting a new sump.

what are peoples thoughts on this any suggestions or experance and how much is a sump for the vrs :thumbdown::thumbup:

When done properly, helicoils are pretty good.

Howver, a new sump woud be better, but will be a lot more expensive.

i can fit a new sumo my self the helicoil i cant so i have to pay for that doing so when you look at it like that its swings and roundabouts but just not sure on best place to get a sump to look into it further

common thing on all vag cars

when it happens at work we just get the hellicoil kit out and repair it there and then never had a problem afterwards as said if done properly you wont have a problem. obviously new sump is best but sometimes peoples budgets dont stretch to new sumps etc.

I had a helicoil done after the Audi garage managed to cross thread the plug on an old Adui 100 (not that they would admit it, I had to get an independent garage to confirm my suspicions). I did about 100k and never lost a drop of oil through it.

helicoil is fine, we have this done all the time at work and the helicoil can be stronger than the original thread,Plus fitting a new sump can be a pain there two allen key bolts next to the gear box which are a pain to get at plus you dont want round them off if you cant get at them. Go the helicoil route it fine, i had it done to my brakes as the thread stripped pulling it out. The chap who does our work charges £50pound.

If done correctly the helicoil type solution is stronger.

The hole for the steel insert is larger and therefore has a larger area in contact with the sump. The insert locks in place so there is no future wear on the sump. The original sump plug screws into the steel insert.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but to fit a helicoil, don't you have to drill out the hole, then re-tap the thread to take the helicoil, which in turn is the same size as the original thread for the plug? If so, how do you ensure you have got rid of all the swarf from the drilling and tapping if you don't remove the sump?

I would say a new sump. im sure with you doing the labour yourself you could get the parts for around the same price

been a while since i last replaced my sump but i think it was around £100 from skoda.

I think when a mate done his, all the parts came to £140ish :-/ was a few months back tho

Drill it out to an oversize, re-tap it and fit a larger plug ?
