Clairity on Folding Exterior mirrors

Featured Replies

Like a few of us I've gone for the electric driver's seat etc ...including folding exterior mirrors. But having read the Superb's owners manual it was about as clear as mud how the folding mirrors worked or went about their job in terms of when do they open/fold can you do it remotely etc. Cockups in the owners manual didn't help! So I asked for some clarity from the Superb forum and this is the response:

With the Superb: when locking with keyfob keep the locking button pressed for at least 2 seconds, the mirrors will start to fold in, you can then let go of the locking button and they will continue fold in. If the windows are also open these will close first, the locking button then has to be pressed again to fold the mirrors.

The mirrors will open out as soon as the ignition is turned on.

The mirrors can also be folded and opened from the mirror control knob in the armrest. (In the Yeti's case on the door)

So, they fold out when turning on the ignition and can be folded in remotely - although it seems they cannot be opened remotely (not really needed I guess it just seemed more logical to me that they would open when unlocking and fold when locking). I think you can only manually fold them in below a certain speed as suggested in the owners manual but i forgot to ask that question.

Thats all seems to be correct. It was discussed recently in previous thread. Yes, you can fold them under a certain speed, 15km/h springs to mind.

Download the Superb owners manual from the link to the Yeti manual. It is all in there.

Really? Believe me I tried the Superb manual (it most definately isn't!) and I saw the other folding mirror thread but couldn't see what I wanted, that was primarily a clear understanding of when the mirrors unfolded. The previous thread was left with not knowing when they unfolded ( and a guess about being able to fold them through the remote because of discrepancies in the manual) and quite understandably offered the thought that you would have to unfold them manually. If the answer is in the handbook somewhere it's certainly not where i would expect to find it, around page 78, and I didn't fancy a trawl through 200 odd pages to try and find some obcure reference to when the mirrors unfold. Thus I went to the Superb forum and got the answer right away. Happily ( and assuming the Yeti and Superb have the same system which is far from certain) they will unfold when turning on the ignition which is a little more professional that having to do it manually, at least I think so.

The 15kph limit is a bit of a pain, there's a few narrowish lanes where I live and the ability to fold the mirrors is excellent (I have a folding mirror Qashqai) but I don't fancy having to slow to 10mph to do it in the Yeti, oh well can't have everything :giggle:

Sorry, misunderstood your query.

Quote from the Superb 6/10 manual

"Folding in both exterior mirrors*

– Turn the rotary knob to position ï«."

"Folding exterior mirrors* using the key with radio remote control

– If all the windows are closed, press the unlock button A3  page 49, fig. 37 on the radio remote control for approx. 2 seconds."

"it is only possible to fold in both exterior mirrors when the ignition is switched on and at a speed of up to 15km/h."

But as you say the the manual is clear as mud with regard unfolding the mirrors, specially as button 3 is the lock button, not the unlock button.

If you have folded them using the remote, then I would expect ignition on to do the unfolding, possibly the opening of the door, but probably not as you don't always drive off after opening a door and you would then have to fold them again.

I suspect if they have been manually folded using the button, then the only way to unfold them would be to use the button again, otherwise the button would be in the wrong position and confuse the system. So does that mean you could drive around with the mirrors folded if you don't unfold them? That is what my old 530d BMW was able to do, unfold at any speed, but only fold at up to 6mph.

I prefer to have the choice as to when they fold. I don't want them to fold every time I lock the car. I once read a CAR long term test where they drained the battery on a long term Peugeot 407 (that folds every time you lock it) whilst camping. Unfolding it via the ignition makes sense since then the mirror button can stay in the L position so that it will always move the glass to the reverse position. If you have to fiddle with it you might forget to set it back to L and it won't move to the reverse position. But also not the end of the world or that difficult to do again!

They just fold in automatically with my Fiesta when you lock the car and then come out when you unlock it ! Cant be far from the same can it ?

As described above it is not the same as your Fiesta since it gives you total control as to when you want them folded and does not waste battery power folding the mirrors every time.

My Grandson would spend ages watching them fold and unfold if he got hold of the fiesta key!!!
