Space behind instrument panel?

Featured Replies

I was wondering if anyone with experience of removing the instrument panel knew how much space there was behind it, if any. I am planning on installing an alarm and one or two other aftermarket things and am currently trying to plan where to put bits. Guess the easy answer is to remove it but Haynes makes it looks like the steering wheel and switch gear all needs to come out. TIA :)

Loads of air ducts behind it for heater, you may get a credit card in there

I pulled the centre vents/hazard light panel out to fit my parrot

and as I recall there was a space either side of the vent above the stereo area. Not a huge area

bigger on the left iirc but it depends what you want to hide in there...

That rules out that idea then :) Leaning towards putting alarm brain under the drivers seat and keeping an eager eye out for door leaks. Will examine space behind hazard/air vents :) The alarm brain isn't that big, about the size of my wallet (full of 2ps  ), but the looms coming off it take quite a bit of space. I think most professional alarm installers would zip tie them under the Body Control Module under driver's dash, so your average thief just reaches under there and pulls the wiring out and the alarm is off.

Not much room behind dashpod at all, no. Not much room for anything to be tucked away anywhere really. The only place that springs to mind is there is a fair space above the glovebox, but you may be comprimising the passenger airbag putting anything there.

It may be easier to stick it behind the glovebox.

Is there a better route for wires from under the glovebox to driver's side of dash than up across the top of the stereo just behind the hazard/vent panel?

It may be easier to stick it behind the glovebox.

Yep, this is what I did recently with my Parrot handsfree brain, after feeding all the cabling out of the dash where the glovebox light cabling comes from.

Seems there's a nice handful of locations near the glove box. There's a space down behind the kick panel, up to the left of the ventilation fan, and directly on top of the glove box. It looks like there's a nice space on the firewall below the fan, until you realise the flap which controls recirc folds down into that space.

Thats the route my wiring took for the oil pressure gauge which is on driver's side. :)
