felicia, more power quest

Featured Replies

hi all, i am in the process of making a decat pipe for my 96 felicia. 1.3 spi. and i remember reading on here that a 1.3 nova bolt on filter will fit with a "few" modifications just wondered if anyone knew what this might entail? ta

if you pop the airbox off you could measure the diameter of the intake.. you can buy universal cone fiilters off ebay for like £10, they are available in many diifferent sizes, might be worth a look

yeah i just dont know how that would fit on, see i am hoping to remove the box altogether and bolt a k and n or equilivant on top of the throttle body, its just i cant find out what size is required?

Remove filter box. Measure the diameter of the circular flange on the throttle body. Order cone filter to fit that flange diameter.

good point! hopefully there will be enough clearance for the bonnet ?

no probably not, you will almost certainly need to put a 90 degree elbow on iit

And putting a filter straight on the throttle body means it'll be taking in warm air instead of cold.....not a good idea.

as dj says best off with the std airbox with a K&N filter element inside (polo carb one is the same if they dont list skoda now)

but honestly you wont "unleash" much power from it without changing camshafts and porting the head etc.

try giving it a full service with fuel filter plugs etc and it will prob go better

okay i am going to fit a panel filter in the airbox and remove the hot airfeed by unclipping the whole intake spout from the box, then run a cold airfeed from the front of the bumper. sound good? or a waste of time?

cold air is always good, if you have a look there is aready a hole for a cold air feed down on the left hand side under the headlight, it goes through to the grille next to the front fog lights.. you might be able to find some bits and pieces from a scrapyard felicia to help you use this existing air feed hole

i was going to run a halfords feed from the grill as the local scrappy has only one felicia and the fronts all caved in :( does anyone know what size the cat is and the dimensions of the flanges, ive hit a wall as the cat in the scrappy has been sawn off so theres no flanges to measure

the pipework is 42mm OD but i dont know about the flanges etc

will a felly get through an emissions test without a cat?

  • Author

no but thats why i wish to make a bolt on / off pipe rather than just weld a pipe in place of the cat! any info about the cat so i can track it down on google would be great!!

i suppose you could rob a cat off a scrapper and just use the flanges off it, or you could draw round a gasket and cut it out from a piece of plate with a gasaxe

yeah i was going to make one from a nice thick bit of stainless at work, do you know where to find the gaskets and are both ends of the cat the same? the one from the scrapy been had already!

the gasket iis only about £3 from the skoda dealer.. there's more then one type of cat iirc, one has a flange both ends and one has one flange and a plain tube the other end... get under your car and have a look

they are the same flange both ends and the orientation is the same both ends, iirc they have 3 bolt triangle bolt patterns

  • Author

cheers! was a bit reluctant to crawl in the puddle growing under my car but i braved it and it has flanges both end! il get myself a gasket nxt weekend and let you know how it goes!

ahh it wont have the same flange both ends tho.. the front end has a 2 bolt spring flex coupling and the rear has a 3 bolt flange.

where are you as i may have a knackered 1.3 cat kicking around that you could have etc

im in colchester so its quite a way away, dont know how much shipping would be? il pay obviously! assuming its not horrendus

I don't know if this will apply to an injection Felly or not, but on some engines the hot air intake (Winter only) was used to prevent venturi icing in cool and moist conditions. This, if it happens, will cause loss of power and ultimately stop the engine until the ice melts again.

  • Author

i know that carb icing can occur on aircraft, but this normally only happens on fast decents and the fact that they are air cooled, no coolant! so hopfully the underbonnet air should always be above freezing! never no tho so will keep an eye on it!

icing up isn't really an issue with fuel injected engines. but the felicia (mpi models) does indeed have a warm feed that pipes hot air from above the manifold into the airbox.. there is a little thermostatically controlled flap which feeds a proportion of warm air in, but there is no bad side effects from removing it

okay sitrep the airbox now has a k and n element in it the resonator box, warm air feed, vacuum valve and all piping have been removed and a cold air feed has been added to replace these. the battery was disconnected for 24 hours to reset the ecu and the car has had a full service, thank you haynes manual! the car feels a lot more responsive and the fuel economy has increased slightly, but more importantly the induction nouse is unreal! its bordering on anti sociable! still wondering if anybody knows the dimensions of the cat and its flanges thanks all

sorry mate been a bit busy at work. I will measure one up for you in the morning,

the other option is to fit a pre injection (1989-1992) fav downpipe and centre box but you will need to weld a lambda boss into it somewhere.

helps with midrange torque a bit too as the fav down pipe is much longer before it goes into 1 pipe (meets about where the cat is now)
