Coil pack change - new cold run values

Featured Replies

I read a while ago a recommendation on 20VTurbo.com that anyone having a coil pack changed should ask their dealer to flash the ECU chip with new cold run values. This may just be for the US spec 1.8T engine, but there again it might also apply to UK spec 1.8Ts.

Would the next Briskoda member to have a coil pack changed under warranty on an [b:10662d1591]unchipped[/b:10662d1591] 1.8T (RS or otherwise) please ask their dealer about that flash upgrade and report back. Ta!

i always used to get [i:2f76187d75]extremely[/i:2f76187d75] uneasy whenever i heard about dealers reflashing ECU's. although i'm pretty sure that won't happen at my present dealer. :thumb:

Reflashing should be a pretty straightforward operation for any Skoda dealer, and if they get it wrong they have to fix it. ...unless its a chipped car, in which case possibly bye bye the expensive programme (if the chip is not locked) and the warranty too. I've reflashed the BIOS on my current PC just the once, and had kittens having read all the warnings about what can go wrong. On the other hand I regularly update the 'brain' on my Garmin PC without a second thought. And I will have my AEG washing machine and Panasonic TV updated (ie reflashed) too if the need arises.

In the meantime, I am happy to be the Briskoda guinea pig for an ECU update if - or when - I have a coil pack fail. But that needn't stop a chipped owner asking their dealer if the cold start values update exists! My nearest dealer has no knowledge of the update, but there again when I last asked they were putting all the variable service cars they were selling onto fixed service intervals.

The whole concept of reflashing ecu's confuses me. Surely if it was this easy to reflash an ecu then any "chipping" to achieve extra perfromance would be done in this way also. I know in some cars you can plug in and download a new program to the ecu, but if this was the case for the 1.8T the whole chipping process would be much easier. :? :? :? :?

Have a look in the Skoda Technical section of our FAQs where you will find an explanation of the difference between off the shelf chips and remaps. All should then be clearer.
