Head Lights

Featured Replies

I love driving my Yeti most of the time, but having experienced dark and wet journeys recently, I find the standard headlight bulbs, in my opinion don't really give enough illumination in the dark and wet in the dipped position. I've adjusted these to give as long a beam as the setting allows. I understand higher output bulbs can be fitted, any members have brand recommendations based on the experience of using. Are there any downsides or legal considerations to take into account?

Osram Night Breakers!!

Standard wattage so fully legal and wont damage any wiring, but much better light output and colour.

Range will be the same as they is set by the antiglare levels.

These bulbs have come top in numerous magasine and consumer tests and are also used by lots of the road rally boys.

Hi Jeep, I can recommend these bulbs.

I used them on my old Accord Tourer and were BRILLIANT B)

They gave a lovely crisp blue/white output and although not road legal in the EU, my Accord passed 2 MOTs' with them fitted and the MOTs' were done by my local Honda main dealer

Thanks Llanigraham - Will buy them online now.

What about the bulbs I suggested?? :dull:

Mac, perhaps the fact that you state and the advertiser states that they are NOT legal in the UK!

(And to be honest their legal version got a rubbish right up in one of the tests I saw Think it was AutoExpress)

Macdemon, thank you also for responding, but does the MOT only check alignment and not output? I'd sooner not take any risks.

Cheers,

JP

Mac, the MOT is not a test of legality, only of roadworthiness. Legality is checked by a VOSA Inspector or certain designated Traffic Police Officers.

However the fitment of non approved, non E specced, illegal parts can and has been the reason for insurance claims being invalidated.

I had Osram nightbreakers on my last car and some are already on their way for my Yeti .....they do make difference

So is the opinion that the Bi-Xenons are not bright enough ?? Or is it that only Elegance has them ??

OEM Xenon/HID are standard on the elegance and an option on the rest.

OEM Xenon's are much better/brighter than standard bulbs, even osram nightbreakers.

Slightly different subject:

For my bicycle I have a 700 lumen light (Lupine Tesla 5)and go cycling with a friend who had an 850 lumen light (L&M). If he is behind me I can't see where I'm going because my shadow is not overcome by my own front light, which is very bright.emoticon-0120-doh.gif

LED front lights are not yet available for cars to my limited knowlege, but they have taken over from HID's on bicycles as they are now as good and much lighter generally.

Someone has brought out a fully E marked 7" round LED headlight, but they are horribly expensive at present. One of the LR mags has fitted them to one of their project vehicles.

Fitting the higher output bulbs is well worth while. I fitted a +50% set last winter and it shows! Going for the Ring +100% this winter.

Graham, Have you fitted your Hellas yet? You won't need to upgrade the headlights with them on.

No, still trying to find a suitable mounting.

I had a set of +100% bulbs in the FL and found they didn't seem to last very long, so beware.

Thanks for the warning. I will go for the Osram instead.

I would have risked the Ring if they were easy to replace - but they are a fiddle resulting in scratched hands. So long life outweighs the small extra brightness.

Incidentally the ones I have in now came from Lidl!!! and they seem to be OK.

Is changing the bulbs on the Yeti very difficult? Only asking as I had Philips Extreme bulbs fitted on my last car (Mazda MPV) Mazda carried out the work as it involved removing the front bumper, battery and some of the heating system :(

Believe it's only the front indicators that require the bumper to be removed.

TP

While were on the subject of lights the brochure describes the standard halogen set-up as "halogen projector headlights with DE-module". Now I've always contested this description to be inaccurate, in that I believe a DE-module is a round bullseye lens similar to that found on the current Fabia and Octavia and xenon equipped cars. Did contact SUK to query this but they stood by their description.

Any motor industry lighting experts out there care to enlighten us; excuse the pun :giggle:

No. Just remove the caps on the back of the headlight unit, pull the plug off the bulb, unclip and remove bulb. Insert new bulb and reverse proceedure.

It is fiddly as there is very little room to get your hand in the headlight housing - but it can be done.

Thanks TP and Terfyn, I just may upgrade mine after our holiday.

I have just fitted some of the new Philips Xtreme Vision 100% bulbs. Hugh difference. Transformed driving at night in my Polo.
