"Clean" cars

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I've been lurking on this site for many weeks and feel that I should contribute something at last...

Ordered my SE 1.2 TSi DSG (that's a mouthfull) on 19th Aug and I'm hoping to take delivery by the end of October - but not getting my hopes up just yet!

Anyway I wondered whether any one else picked up on the interesting article in the motoring section of Saturday's Daily Telegraph regarding vehicle exhaust polution.

The main thrust of the article was that in all of the talk about CO2 emissions everyone has sort of overlooked the other horrible stuff that comes out of the back, nitrous oxide, carbon monoxide, unburnt hydrocarbons and diesel particulates to name a few.

Some clever people have come up with a formula for comparing the "cleanliness" of cars taking into acount all of their emissions and guess which car comes out on top? Yup, the 1.2 Yeti at 49 mg/km.

The list is not complete but throws up some very interesting results with Mercedes B class B190 BlueEfficiency (a very low CO2 emitter) being the fifth worst polluter at 999 mg/km.

That's just sloppy journalism in my opinion.

With the advent of catalytic converters and diesel particulate filters, all that comes out of the exhaust pipes in water and air.

To be honest......so effing what!! :dull::o

We the motorists are currently the whipping boy for every half bit, untrained, tree hugging, sandal wearing, environmentalist who wants to get a bit of publicity.

Compare us to the amount of methane caused by sheep and cows, or the amount of crap that India, China or America produce, or the amount of pollution caused by all these bloody environmentalists flying to conferences around the world, and then find me the evidence that I am choking the planet, and I might do something about it.

A couple of years ago we had a Green Fair here in Llanidloes. I was sat in the Coffee shop that afternoon and got talking to a man from Greenpeace. He was querying why there were so many muddy Land Rovers in this area and why did people have to have them. When I asked how did he expect farmers to get around their land, he said they should use horses or walk!! I suggested that perhaps he opened his eyes and looked at the mountains and moorland in sight of town and statred to actually think before he opened his mouth in the future. If he'd been in the pub next door I doubt he'd have got out in one piece!!

Oh and yes, someone has already criticised me for having a 4x4 last time we were in Cardiff. They got told to F off!!

In the old days, Skoda cars were very environmentally friendly, many of them were often "zero emission" for large parts of the day.*

The parts involved in them being pushed or towed cos they wouldn't start!!

I have few concerns about the green credentials of my Yeti.

It is economical and whilst not the lowest polluter is quite competitive with cars of its size and smaller. My colleagues petrol Jeep Cherokee uses almost 3 times as much fuel as my Yeti despite sounding more like a diesel than my diesel Monster! It also stinks of noxious fumes when she starts it up because the emissions control systems don't work from cold.

I await my first encounter with someone from the anti 4 wheel drive brigade as I shall leave them in no doubt as to their stupidity. I am no fan of those who use Range Rovers and the like for school runs but these 'greens' show how daft they are when they totally ignore the Jaguar, BMW and Mercedes saloons that are just as harmful to the planet.

Close, but no cigar. There is some NOx (Nitrous Oxides) and SOx from both the combustion and from the DPF re-generation. Current catalysts in passendger cars do nothing about this.

Engine mangement - mainly EGR to reduce the combustion temperature - does try to reduce the NOX, but any sulfur in the fuel wll come out as Sulfur Oxides.None of those are greenhouse gases, but do contribute to the acid rain. Nothing compared to coal fired power plants, though.

What planet do you people live on?

Why is the article "sloppy journalism"? They are reporting the findings of others, ClenaGreanCars supported by data supplied by all manufacturers to the UK's Vehicle Certification Agency. No combustion process involving hydrocarbons is truly clean and catylists are not perfect nor are particulate filters; inspite of them engines still polute, just a lot less than they used to do.

I'd feel a lot more smug about my green credentials if I had ordered my Yeti on the basis of this report as it is I chosed it because it fitted my requirements more fully than the alternatives.

Journalism in general is sloppy.............or are you naive enough to believe everything you read??

I'm often naive but not to the point of taking everything at face value and I certainly don't believe everything I read.

I am intelligent enough to read an article and decide whether or not it has any merit.

The point the Telegraph article makes rather well (bearing in mind that they are a very pro-motorist publication) is don't believe that just because you are buying a low CO2 vehicle that you are buying a low polluting vehicle.

I should also add that I am decidedly sceptical about the whole CO2 business but remain open to good debates around the topic.

Macdemon- I assume you have some scientific credentials or research that you have personally done, to refute the claims in the article then? You seem to know better.

To be honest......so effing what!! :dull::o

Umm- for anyone who lives in a city or town, it actually is a pretty big deal. Low level pollution is a big factor for asthma sufferers and peoples health in general. There are some pretty nasty things that come out of tail pipes.

Agreed, as an asthma sufferer, BUT what about all the other polluting traffic that is far worse than my Yeti? is anyone picking on them.

You're in London. Have you seen the cr@p that comes out of the back of those busboats that ply up and down the Thames? When we were in London the other month and caught one at Westminster Pier you could hardly see over the river for black clouds of soot it produced.

I am getting heartliy urinated off with us motorists being the whipping boy when it is not all our fault.

Hi Little- Brit. I think that a "welcome to the forum" would not be out of place here.

You seem to have touched on an emotive topic ........................
