Scraping noise from rear

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've noticed a scraping noise coming from (what seems to be) the nearside rear. Sometimes this is noticable at slow speeds, in a straight line, but mostly when going round right hand tight bends, small roundabouts etc. It doesn't happen when I'm on the brakes.

Rear brake pads are well down and discs are fooked too. Could it just be that, or something a little more sinister? It sounds lile a light metallic scraping noise, not a rumble like a wheel bearing or similar.

Any ideas please?

Thanks,

Martin

Could just be the discs,I had the same sort of noise at the front,my discs were like a ploughed field on the inner face, (a common VAG problem).I changed the discs at the weekend, noise has gone.

Doesn't help that the wear sensor is on the outer face ;)

Thanks for that Kenny.

The rear pads are RIGHT down, and the disc has a good lip on it too. I think the backing material is rubbing on the edge of the lip on the disc. I know that this is happening as you can see the marks on the lip. I'm going to change the pads (which I already have) and discs as a set together rather than wasting a good set of pads on a knackered disc.

Could this be the noise I'm hearing?

If your brakes are as worn as you say then the noise is normal, however you need to replace them asap. Ive seen worn out pads fall out of the carrier before, then your looking at a new caliper as well!

I had this and it was the rusty lip on the rear discs rubbing on caliper/pad. Change of discs and pads sorted it out.

Yeah, I know I have to replace them asap. emoticon-0106-crying.gif The next couple of months are REALLY tight though.

I've even considered effectively throwing away the new pads I have by fitting them onto the buggered discs I have. I don't expect the discs to pass the MOT in Feb. So before the test I'd have to replace discs and pads again. It's a waste of money in the long run but I won't be able to afford a set of discs till late November at the earliest.

Rear discs are only £15 each if these are the right ones...

and pads are around £15 also.

emoticon-0148-yes.gif yeah that's the ones. But I ain't got £30 to spare for that till late Nov at the earliest. That's the real pi$$er, I have the pads at home already.

ok, sold some stuff on eBay and went and got some discs today.

Nearside no problem, all went ok and very smoothly. Offside went ok until I went to undo the disc retaining screw! Why do they make them out of butter?emoticon-0183-swear.gifemoticon-0183-swear.gifemoticon-0179-headbang.gif Nothing would shift it, head totally chewed out. Ended up drilling the head off. The shaft is still in there, I'll borrow a left handed thread from work this week to screw it out then replace it. Aggro I could do without to be honest!

But the pads had definitely had it! Changed not a moment too soon! Will post up some pictures later....

Taken it for a test drive and no more scraping noise. Phew! And one less thing to worry about come MOT time emoticon-0100-smile.gif
