Yeti vs Octavia

Featured Replies

I'd imagine several folk have traded in their Octy in favour of the Yeti. Or could some even be considering the reverse?

How have you found this transition regarding any positives and negatives - regrets or none ?

I'm changing from an Octavia Estate to a Yeti.

The primary reason is access. I have a life-long leg problem which isn't improving with age and a Yeti is much easier to get in and out of. My 88 years old mother-in-law also has problems getting into the Octavia because it is relatively low compared with the Yeti. In some ways I regard it as a tall Octavia.

Other than access issue I would be happy to keep the Octavia, in all other respects its brilliant.

Whether the 1.2 TSI DSG will be as rewarding a drive as the 2L TDI DSG I'm not sure, but now we are both retired now we won't be doing the mileage we were and the higher fuel consumption of the petrol Yeti compared with the diesel Octavia won't be that significant .

Positives:

Easier access for driver and passengers

Better driving position

Quieter

Deals with sleeping policemen, speed cushions and potholes better

Negatives:

Higher fuel costs

Less power

Possible reduced capability to carry long materials for DIY

It will be called a van by some!

No regrets yet...

I came from a 2008 VRS estate which I owned for a couple of years and 16,000 miles. I liked it very much indeed and spent a number of weeks considering a new octy scout instead of the yeti. Ground clearance is identical at around 180mm and they both use the same basic drivetrain.

Things I miss? Without doubt it would have to be the boot space. I also thought that it was an especially good looking car in it's race blue metallic exterior paint colour. I also feel that as standard the Yeti is under specified in the brake department from

the factory, well certainly my 1.8. The 170 tdi felt better to me and that has the

bigger 312mm setup up front. However, no one else on the forum tends to agree on

my brake view so it may just be a case of me expecting too much. My past six cars

have all had bigger brakes fitted as does, currently, my other daily driver so again, I wouldn't let this point worry you too much.

Things that I prefer with the Yeti....

Damping quality is best in class Imo. The way it filters out the bumps from the cabin is very good indeed. It also gives an exceptionally good balance of comfort and handling on the road.

I actually prefer the lower capacity 1.8TSi unit to the 2 litre in the VRS. The 1800 is smoother and quieter. Somehow it just comes across as more advanced but it also seems to pull from lower down and spins round the towards the red line with equal gusto. If it's only putting out the 168bhp that skoda claim, I'll eat the pistons and

conrods for breakfast followed by the crank for lunch!

However, due to the refinement, amount of sound proofing around the cabin and the linear power delivery of the engine, it doesn't

''feel' as quick on the straights. It's quite deceptive in that respect Imo.

Overall interior cabin space is better in the Yeti but that's an advantage of driving a 'box' on wheels. :p The flexibility of the rear seats is brilliant and from memory they both offer about the same 70-72cm distance to the front seat back in my usual driving position. It offers one of the best combinations of interior space and flexibility along with the tight external dimensions that make it a doddle to park!

I rate the optional panoramic sunroof very highly indeed too and the swivvely headlamps are superb at night.

Also, cabin comfort feels like it's from a class above imo. Again, I think I was in the minority re the vrs seats but I never found the vrs seats that comfortable. After a three to four hour drive in the octy, my back knew about it! In the yeti I've trundled though Spain and France in 22 hours and I literally stepped out feeling fresh! Cabin ergonomics are first class as is the Audi-esque build quality, both internally and externally.

And of course, the haldex four drivetrain gives the yeti great ability; not so much

proven by me in extreme off road situations yet but certainly in torrential rain. The pre emptive nature of the new version leaves the older gen 2 cars in the shade. It just feels totally planted and feels very able to cocoon you from the worst of the British weather!

Another plus point for me would be the rarity value that the Yeti gives, at least currently around these parts anyway!

Overall, I can't think of a car I'd rather own as the family holdall. Not even for another 5k to be honest. Imo it's the best all rounder I've ever owned and by some degree.

I exchanged my Honda Accord Tourer (similar to the Superb) for the Yeti and my only regrets are

Less acceleration & cornering ability

N0 auto open/close remote tailgate

Appart from those, I regret nothing

I looked at an Octavia 4x4 Estate and the Scout.

Test drove a friends standard Estate and didn't like the ride or the "lowness".

Neither of the 4x4's had the ground clearance I required, and both were too big physically.

Only option was the Yeti!!

I was looking to replace my Octavia Elegance and had a test drive in a 1.8 TSI Yeti and eventually went for a TDI Scout.

I loved the petrol refinement and rev range, but at the end of the test drive of about 20miles in urban trafiic, it was reading 18.8mpg, so that killed it for me.

Also I have a young family so the flexibility of bunging bikes, cots, and the kitchen sink in the Octavia is unbeatable. The lower roof is better for a roofbox for the summer hols too.

The Yeti does ride well, and the driving position is excellent - the height is much less marked in the Scout. I think that the margin on the ride quality and refinement in the current generation Scout is quite small, except the overhangs mean its less good over humps and on rapid cornering. The currrent CRD140 engine is excellent and I regularly get 50+mpg even with a fair amount of urban traffic. I just wish Skoda would release the 170 in the Scout - that would make it a real Allroad killer...

My wide loved the Yeti's sunroof (the Octavia one is an old school letterbox), but then ordering that became a right headache.

Couldn't agree more, so I'm about to get a Skoda officially sanctioned and installed Stage 1 MTM remap that will not void any part of my new car warranty. It's not cheap, but for the equivalent of about £700 it will deliver 125kW (170BHP) and 360Nm, plus marginally better fuel consumption.

Being able to choose a new car I really really wanted the Yeti, however since the Missis NEEDS an automatic and I was not prepared to pay the fuel penalty of the 4 by 4 being the only diesel DSG option in the Yeti we "settled" for an Octavia. sigh.

My reason for wanting the Yeti was purly & simply for the upright driving position, it also it must be said felt very spacious compared to the Octavia. The removable adjustable rear seats were also a significent attraction.

So i will save my pennies and hopefully pick off a Greenline Yeti to replace my dear old Galaxy, all in due course.

Cheers

M

It might be sanctioned in NZ, but it certainly isn't here!
