Goodbye 1.9TDi hello 1.8TSi !

Featured Replies

Picking it up tonight! My first ever new car in 35 years of driving.

Decided it was time to part company with the 2006 Octavia Elegance 1.9TDi. Didn't want another diesel especially as they all now have DPF and I'm not sure that my low winter mileage would suit one of those.

Thought seriously about a VRs then lighted on the 1.8TSi - not quite the same performance but not so far off and I could get the DSG plus a few bits and still have some change.

Fed up of the ubiquitous silvers, greys and blacks - I want a colour again - Corrida Red!

Down to the dealers to see what sort of deal I could get. Corrida Red Octavia Hatch in the showroom - yes! Nice colour.

5-6 month waiting list for new Octavias!

BUT Couldn't believe my luck.

The red Octavia was an unregistered 1.8 TSi Elegance with DSG and it was available. Has extras too - MFSW and maxidot (tick), 17" wheels and sports suspension (tick), full leather interior (hmmmm...), curtain airbags (OK). Not so bothered about the leather but SWMBO likes it so that's her happy. I would have ordered tyre pressure monitor and auto lights but I can live without them.

Had a test drive, 25 miles of ear to ear grin, fell in love, signed on the dotted, pick it up tonight. All completed in under 2 weeks. All I have to do now is pay for it. Oh yes..... And enjoy driving it :rofl:

As they would say aboot here.

" :D Your health to enjoy" :D

My first response was on a slightly different tack but seeing as how I dont know you :)

Well done mate! Nice choice you made :)

Sounds like a result

Enjoy your new car.

Brilliant - nice that you've avoided a wait too. Don't forget to post pictures when you get it

Enjoy it,

Steve.

bit more thirst------ but SMOOOTH quiet and gets warmed up quick -- enjoy ::-)

Nice Colour

You'll rarely see an engine get so much praise as the 1.8TSi

Just took it out for a spin. 55 miles of empty A roads. I'm still grinning from ear to ear. What a motor!!

The engine barely rises above a whisper (remember I have just switched from a 1.9TDi!), the DSG gearchanges are imperceptible, suddenly you realise that the countryside is going past rather quickly, speedo? 95mph!! Not helped by 80mph being straight up - 60 was straight up on the old one. I'll have to watch that!

70mph in 7th gear is just a smidgin over 2000rpm - you could hear a fly fart!

The Maxidot speed warning is now set to 80mph to preserve my licence until I get used to it.

Fuel consumption for the trip according to Maxidot was 42.4mpg. I think I am going to like this Octy even more than the first.

Oh I love the 18TSi so much. It has all the power you need, silky smooth and economical if you don't push it (which is hard to avoid). My only problem with it is as my wife likes the flexibilty of it and ease of driving I am usually forced to drive the 9 year old 1.2 Corsa. Maybe I should just go and buy another 1.8TSi to replace the Vx.

Keep loving it, you won't regret saying good by to the "devils fuel"

Just don't plan to go across to the continent then (especially Eurotunnel where it's barred) because having an LPG tank seems to create all kinds of problems with bookings. emoticon-0120-doh.gif

Its cheaper on the ferry

But ET doesn't get affected by bad weather/fog & if you're like me get seasick at the slightest swell. emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

Besides it's the pure convenience factor of the tunnel that makes it for me, the only thing that spoils the tunnel is the bloody gestapo called HMCE who think anyone having a personalized plate is a bloody drug dealer or contraband bandit. emoticon-0183-swear.gif

Another Octavia 1.9Tdi Elegance estate on the market mine went yesterday to be replaced by an Octavia 1.4 TSi Elegance Estate, made the mistake of just saying wanted same again after the luxury pack I had for the previous one was only available seperately and forgot maxi dot Aghh. So the Anthrcite grey has been replaced by storm blue. Already forgot and stalled it when getting out ssooooo quiet. Early impressions

Unless it's the "wrong king of snow"

That was Eurostar, who's French wizards forgot to install the snow baffles in the powercars. emoticon-0120-doh.gif

So that wasn't the fault of ET. emoticon-0110-tongueout.gif

Have to agree about the engine being very quiet. I've had mine 5 months now and it still impresses! And the torque is unbelievable for a petrol 1.4. The 1.8 must be a real rocket!

I've had mine nearly 2 years and it can still surprise me when I boot it to overtake something. Feels like a lot more than 160 bhp

Don't forget to activate your DRL's if they aren't already!

You should be able to activate your DRL's without the need to use VCDS, you can do it via the indicator stalk, if you RTM.

Glad to hear of another happy motorist!

There's lots of praise, here and in other threads, for the 1.8 TSI engine. Has anyone any experience of comparing this with the 2.0 TSI in the petrol vRS?

My current CR diesel vRS is excellent, but I might go for a petrol next time. The advantage of a 1.8 Elegance over the vRS, as well as costing £2,000 less, is the better ride and slightly better specification. If the superior power of the 2.0 is felt only at higher revs, there might not be much in it in normal driving.

While I'm on, thanks to James at Allams for a test drive in a Fabia vRS - a great car and another enticing alternative encouraging me to ensure that this, my first Skoda but fourth VAG car, isn't my last.
