Long life service DIY reset

Featured Replies

Does anyone know what is the cheapest way to reset long life "service due now" without reverting back to "normal" schedules? I am happy to purchase a VAG service tool, but prices range from 8 quid for something off flee bay that plugs into diagnostic port and laptop on the other end to £200 or so. Will the cheap device do the job?

I believe this is the cheapest hand-held that will reset service lights. I don't think the shareware version of VAG-COM (laptop software / cable) supports it, but I could be wrong...

what about the fixed interval servicing? (only a slight thread hijack - more of a detour, really :giggle: )

I'm sure I've read something along the lines of pushing a knob and turning on the ignition... or was that for something else - but can't find it anywhere (yes, I have tried searching but haven't got all afternoon to wade through the results :S )

So - having now had its oil changed, is there a simple way to reset the service indicator - keeping the car on fixed servicing?

cheers guys

Pop in and see Ali at Unit18 in Easton Maudit, he has vag com and I'm sure he would reset for you.

Ignition off and hold the mileage reset knob in

Turn ignition on

Release knob

Turn knob to right.

That should do it

yep - I knew that

thanks for the ultra quick response (lunchtime is a great time to post queries  )

Im off today, got a nightmare of a toothache, taking some really strong painkillers which I cant drive or operate machinery whilst on so im taking my mind off it by helping out on here. So some advice may be a little fuzzy...lol

What is with all the different service terms? I've got a superb mk1 (02) which, accordingly to the book is QG1. Not that I know what that means!

Is it possible to change from type of service to another? Why would someone want to? A quick run down would be brill if you are really bored. :-)

Yes you can swap from one to another (at service time)

QG0 is fixed, 10k or a year

QG1 is variable (between 9-18k) or 2 years

If your doing fairly decent mileage then the light will come on at about 15k ish

So the idea being it saves you coming in for a service so often, even if you doing low miles you will be every other year rather than every year.

Personally Id stick with fixed, never been a fan of variable, its all to a bit **** in the wind IMHO, plus when you come to sell a car I think a 10k service book looks a lot more appealing.

QG0 is fixed servicing - QG1 and QG2 are variable servicing (IIRC). You can only maintain variable servicing by resetting the reminders using diagnostics software - resetting it using the trip meter button also puts the car onto fixed servicing, which I don't think can be undone. Whether it's this way to protect the interests of dealers is a whole different matter!

Dash can be recoded as many times as you like so yeah it can be undone.

tried it - but doesn't work - still get the 'Service Now' message and tone :(

Is the method above described completely accurate? eg only hold the knob in after the ignition's off?

After the ignition comes on, how quick should you release the knob? how much does it need to be twisted right (clockwise?)? etc

Just wondering if I'm not quite doing it right.

cheers

You have to keep the knob held in whilst turning the ignition on, then the service now will be displayed. Then turn to the right to clear it.

Hmm... that's what I did.

When it clears, is it meant to go beep or anything?

No it just goes off back to the trip computer.

...all I got was that Service Now started flashing

the knob turns very easily, and continually with no feel of any stop. is that right? how much should it need to be turned for the setting to clear?

by 'turn the ignition on' I presume this means you don't have to actually turn the motor?

Are you turning the right button? I'm sure the 'clock' button doesn't turn all the way round. Should be 'springy dead end' to either end.

I'm turning the mileage reset button

I thought I read it to be the clock one? I may be wrong. Will read it tonight.....

Piiisssst, err, keep it quiet cos I don't want it getting out, but if you do a normal reset on it and write down the mileage, and then reset it when it pops up in 8k miles time, and then book it in for a service after 15k you'll be fine.

And before we all come in with it might've run to 24k before the light comes on, shame on you, if you think a gallon of oil is suitable for those miles, let alone the filter then you have no knowledge, the best engines are the ones that don't have to work in sludge, 24k = sludge.
