Yeti 4x4 system

Featured Replies

Can anybody tell me whether the Yeti's 4x4 system and the features of the 'Off road' button work when the vehicle is in reverse?

yes, according to the brochure

and "yes" from experience - I've tried it!!!

And so does the hill-hold going up a hill in reverse! I've tried that too!

Agreed.

I have to reverse down a hill to reach the road and, last winter, the Off-Road button proved invaluable in both directions.

It is worth remembering that, in ice and snow, slow driving is essential (obvious I know) BUT it is in these conditions that the Off-Road control works best.

Although for crossing stretches of water you want to make sure you turn off the offroad mode.

Please explain. I presume you are referring to wading through floods.

I found that offroad road really limits the throttle response (which is great on snow and mud as it helps prevent wheel spin) and makes the car feel a bit lazy. As you go through water you will want the engine to increase it's output pretty quickly as the force of the water will want to make the car stop in it's tracks so quick throttle response is what you need to keep yourself moving at a steady speed.

I'm sure it will work fine in offroad mode but I prefered it off for going through water.

Does the 'off road' mode change the accelerator pedal response like some other 4x4's then?

On Road 80% of the power is at the top of the travel and Off Road it more progressive throughout the pedal travel so you don't go over a bump and take off, plus you get better control?

Thank you for that. I get the point. This may be useful for this coming winter!!

Referring to another thread, I notice that the engine speed at idle is held at about 800-900 rpm and this works as a crawler gear when in 1st. The Yeti will cope with quite steep hills in this mode. The off-road button has no affect on the idle speed unfortunately.

My X-Trail had this but the engine speed was raised to 1000rpm when it sensed (through the speedo?) that the car was moving. I assumed that, as the XT had no low gear ratio, this was a (rather feeble) substitute.

Very much so. The throttle is "slugged" and feels unresponsive. Off-road does much more, all the ESPs and other electronic bits are remapped to give an enhanced response to slip.

Also limits engine RPM to 2500 to protect the clutch.

Cheers, thought it was the case but just needed to confirm.

Thanks for that, need it for manoeuvring boats and caravans about so essential it is operational in reverse.

Please see my other thread of today's date reagrding 4X4 and the lack of the off-road button. I too had an XTrail and very good it was too. I appreciate the changed throttle response with the off-road button but am I gong to be seriously hampered without the button on a 4X4SE Yeti car we have just ordeered? The button cannot be fitted retrospectively according to my dealer!
